Great new baritone disc

I picked the new Dave Schumacher disc, Endangered Species, on Summit on Monday and have had it in the player a lot since. Dave is a new name to me, he has two prior releases to his credit. I love the baritone and this guy delivers the goods, a great tone and sound in a modern mainstream setting. Most of the disc features a quartet with bari and trombone frontline with organ and drums. If you dig Glenn Wilson, Nick Brignola and Ronnie Cuber you will like this disc. You can ceck out mp3 samples at his website, www.daveschumacher.com (not to confused with another sax playing dave schumacher at www.davidschumacher.com).

The only sidemen I had heard much of before was Jimmy Cobb, who plays on the organ pieces, and tenormen Ned Goold and Jerry Weldon, who play on one cut which also features Schumacher on tenor. According to the liner notes, Schumacher has been holding down the baritone chair in Harry Connick's band since 1990.I liked it so much I promptly ordered his other two releases. Check him out.

I am a huge fan of the big horn but had never heard of

David Schumacher before. At Tom's request I ordered a

couple of David's CDs; his current release "Endangered Species"

and one from 1996 on the Amosaya label entitled "Every Corner"

with one of my favorite jazz pianists Mike LeDonne along for

the session.

"Every Corner" arrived in yesterday's mail and I listened to

it one my way to rehearsal last night. Let it suffice to say that

I was Very impressed. David is one of the few baritonists

I have heard who can play the horn with masterful command as a soloist.

He is a very strong player much in the style of Nick Brignola. He can deliver

a ballad with passion and gentleness as well. Also a great feel for the

latin side of the genre.

This guy is the real deal :tup . I look forward to the delivery of his

current release; "Endangered Species". This fellow deserves recognition

far beyond his present state.

Thanks again for the excellent recommendation Tom :)
