bluesbro Posted March 27, 2006 Report Posted March 27, 2006 (edited) The only Clifford Brown live recordings I own are the 'Live at Birdland' with Art Blakey and the 'Jam' sessions on Emarcy with Clark Terry, Dinah Washington, etc. I have all of his studio Pacific, Blue Notes and Emarcy sides and every note he played was something special. What are the essential live CD's I should get? I'd prefer to buy some good recorded shows first and leave the 'bootleg' sound quality for later. Thanks! Edited March 27, 2006 by bluesbro Quote

Joe Posted March 27, 2006 Report Posted March 27, 2006 The Bee Hive material issued by Columbia. Yes, the sound is rough, but the playing... this is "Brownie Meets Sonny", for all intents and purposes. Vinyl only, but you won;t let that stop you, will ya? Quote
Free For All Posted March 27, 2006 Report Posted March 27, 2006 Beehive is available on CD. Although I believe Lonehill is one of the "naughty" labels. Quote

Alexander Hawkins Posted March 27, 2006 Report Posted March 27, 2006 A second for 'The Begninning and the End'. Stunning versions of 'Donna Lee', 'Walking' and 'A Night in Tunisia'. The band is not too bad. Plus, it's not earth shattering, but I quite enjoy the Chris Powell and his Blue Flames (is this the name, or am I making it up?) recordings on the front end of the CD. Quote
Ron S Posted March 27, 2006 Report Posted March 27, 2006 On this one, I'd recommend that instead of the above older GNP Crescendo release, you get the relatively recent Fresh Sound release of the same concerts: The Fresh Sound release is more complete (it includes passages that were edited out of the GNP release), is MUCH better documented, and has better sound. I had both and, after A/B'ing them, gave the GNP disc away. Here's the AMG review of the Fresh Sound CD. Quote
Free For All Posted March 27, 2006 Report Posted March 27, 2006 Wow, I hadn't heard of that Fresh Sound version. Time for an upgrade I guess! Thanks Ron..... Quote
