After Joe Segal's 80th Birthday party with Yusef Lateef, Lou Donaldson, Junior Mance and a host of other performers on 4/28 at the Symphony Center and Dave Douglas/Ira Sullivan (2 different shows) on 4/29 in Chicago I will be heading off to a week of jazz in NYC with my good friend and board member Jazzkrow. At this time we will see Hank Jones/Joe Lovano Duo at Lincoln Center on 4/30 and "A Great Night in Harlem" at the Apollo Theater (Abbey Lincoln, Ron Carter, Jimmy McGriff, Clark Terry, Harold Mabern, Ben Riley, George Cables, Gary Bartz, Johnnie Mae Dunson and many others) on 5/4. We haven't finalized our shows for Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday yet but hope to see the VV Big Band as well as the Mingus Big Band but are open to suggestions.

Only going to be there for five nights and way too many things on our "to see/do" list. We would love to hook up with some of the NY board members if time permits....if any of you are interested in getting together for dinner one night, please send me a pm or respond here and we'll go from there.

Any tips on food, sights, cds, photography exhibits and so on would be greatly appreciated. If you have any spare subway tokens, we'll take those as well!!! We are staying in Manhattan, about 14 blocks from Times Square (close to Lincoln Center).

Thanks!

Mark

Seeing as you're staying near Lincoln Center, and you will be seeing some performances there, you'll be pleased to know there is a large Tower Records right across the street from Lincoln Center, at 66th and Broadway. The entire basement is devoted to jazz, soul, oldies, etc. They have a good selection of mainstream titles, imports, box sets, etc.

Have fun in NY.

THANKS FOR THE TIP ON TOWER RECORDS

We're Dusty Groove kind of guys for our cds-or CD Universe to help the Board.

Or if we are really patient-yourmusic.com

Tower has just got too expensive.

Hey, New Yorkers, where do we get "THE" New York bagel, pastrami sandwhiches, chessecake, thin crust pizza, etc. near our mid-town digs? Inquiring minds/hungry stomachs wanna know :g

Food will be a close second to all the jazz we're going to hear.

And I'm trying to talk Mark into seeing one Broadway play on Wednesday, May 3.

Do any plays have mid-week matinees?

On the food, is driving to Brooklyn an option? ;)

Seriously, I'll post some suggestions after I give it some thought.

I'm all for hooking up for a beer and maybe some music if time allows.

Thanks for the welcome. I've been on this board for a while, and was surprised to see this was my first post. This is a great forum, and I've gotten tons of good info from here. Mosaic can thank this board for my binge-buying from them. Making up for lost time I guess.

Oh, and Jazzkrow, I'm all too familiar with yourmusic. I've been with them since the $4.99 days. Just used them again for the Cellar Door boxset. But if you're in a browsing mood, Tower is a fun place to stop by.

As to your other questions, there are a ton of options. In or near midtown: For Deli (corned beef, Pastrami, etc.), you can't go wrong with the Carnegie Deli or Stage Deli. They're both on 7th avenue, around 55th street. For bagels, H&H are great (they're THE NY bagels referred to in movies, tv shows, etc.). They're at 80th and Broadway. Cheesecake--Junior's in Brooklyn is the best, but not too convenient. Lots of delis and restaurants will have good NY cheesecake.

Enjoy.

H&H is definitely a great place for a bagel.

I like both Stage and Carnegie, but expect a wait. Both are major tourist attractions.

If you feel adventurous go on down to Katz's. I'd say hit The Second Avenue Deli, but it's gone. :(

Katz Deli

If you insist on staying in Manhattan for pizza ;) , here are a few spots to try.

De Marco's - Houston and McDougal St. (Greenwich Village)

Lombardi's - Mott and Mulberry (Little Italy)

Una Pizza Napoletana - 12th St and 2nd Ave (East Village)

You won't regret going beyond midtown for dining.

Steakhouse recommendations to follow.....

Chris, thanks for the tips. I'm not opposed to going outside of Manhattan but we don't have a car so we'll need to figure out the transportation.....

For my tastes the Carnegie Deli has the best pastrami in the world. Once I escorted a bunch of musicians from Chicago to NYC for a Chicago night at Carnegie Hall (part of the Newport fest). I directed a group to the CG for lunch and for years pianist Joe Johnson told all in earshot "This man got me the best sandwich I ever had".

I'm sure some connoisseurs will trump me with a neighborhood favorite but the Carnegie does it for me.

Be sure to ask for it on white with lettuce and mayo.

Don't worry there is plenty good things to be found in Manhattan.

Steakhouses for sure! Although the best (Peter Luger) is Brooklyn. :)

Sparks

Frankie and Johnnie's

Uncle Jack's

BLT Prime Dig the music!

All of these come with the catesta seal of approval.

Let me know if you want more....

Chuck, if you ever make it back to Manhattan I'll take you to one of them neighborhood places and make you forget all about Carnegie. :P

For thin crust pizza John's is GREAT- there's one in Greenwich Village on Bleecker ST. and I believe there is one near Times Square.

For Junior's(ne plus ultra of cheesecake), just get the 'R' or 'B' or 'Q' train to DeKalb Ave in Brooklyn and go right upstairs and enter cheesecake heaven! They also have eggcreams, which have neither eggs nor cream in them.

If you're REALLY adventurous for pizza, the place that is hailed by many for the best slice in NYC is DiFara's. To watch Domenico DeMarco make a pie is to watch an artiste at work. You may 45 minutes for a slice, but it is well worth it. 'Q train to Avenue 'J' in Brooklyn, walk one short block and you're in pizza heaven. The area is no problem as far as crime, etc.

Send me a couple of lbs before I invest in a plane ticket. :)

I could stand to lose a couple of pounds, so this works out well.

:bad:

I'm looking into that Pastrami delivery. :D
