relyles Posted April 4, 2006 Report Posted April 4, 2006 Is anyone familiar with this recording? It is a 2003 release on the ILk label. The personnel looks interesting so I am curious whether anyone has heard it, or even heard of it? More info from the Ilk website: Line-up Kresten Osgood - Drums Dr. Lonnie Smith - Hammond B3 Anders Provis - Ghost Percussion Michael Blake - Saxophone About this record Hammond Rens is a massive organ-sax-drum workout (with a pinch of "Ghostpercussion"). This double CD almost reaches hysterical energy climaxes and also has some beautiful soulful zones. Not your typical organ record. No clichees. its soul and jazz but with a fresh sound. Hammond Rens represents some of Lonnie Smiths best playing since the 70´s. A must have for any organ- and Quote
neveronfriday Posted April 5, 2006 Report Posted April 5, 2006 There's a review on that other jazz board: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=18909 I saw Osgood live many times. One of the quirkiest drummers to watch, but a very distinct style. That guy has rhythm in his blood, no doubt about it. He's also all over the place in DK ... usually, he's the most active musician during the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, playing more gigs than anyone else. On the last day, he usually looks like a ghost. Maybe they play him then? Quote
neveronfriday Posted April 5, 2006 Report Posted April 5, 2006 (edited) I had this one on my server for another board. This was taken in 2002, just around the corner from where I was staying in DK. It's been blown up a bit, but it's Osgood towards the end of the festival that year. Edit: And, yes, his cans were terrible (and had been thrown around quite a bit those two weeks or so) and the cymbals were really old mouldy Zildjans (some people say that old mouldy Zildjans sound better ), but Osgood made the kit sound good ... and it suited his outward appearance. kh1958 Posted April 3, 2022 Report Posted April 3, 2022 I just heard this drummer, Kreston Osgood, at the Big Ears Festival, backing up Odean Pope and Immanuel Wilkins in a trio and bought this CD from him after the set. Quote
BFrank Posted April 4, 2022 Report Posted April 4, 2022 I saw that Big Ears show, too. Very interesting, and very quirky. I liked him. Ran into him at our hotel and told him how much I enjoyed his drumming and that show. I think it was a one-off for him to get to play with those guys. Quote
kh1958 Posted April 4, 2022 Report Posted April 4, 2022 Starting my third listen of the first CD in the 2 CD release with Lonnie Smith and Michael Blake; it's a rather intense CD; glad to be hearing this one. Quote
