mike casinghino Posted April 9, 2006 Report Posted April 9, 2006 anyone looking for some hot,funky,jazz/fusion recordings, mind transplant, recently reissued by toshiba, is the way to go! three geetar players, including tommy bolin, imo, easily the best recording of this type, put out by blue note. for the times that you want to get down, and not critically anlayze every note, but just have a funky hoedown, repeat after me,MIND TRANSPLANT! Guest akanalog Posted April 9, 2006 Report Posted April 9, 2006 eh...a little wanky too amped up guitar shredding for me. i traded it to my friend and he was pretty pumped, so i guess it depends what you like your fusion to sound like. i heard there is another version out there with a 15 minute jam at the end...perhaps available from tommy bolin's website. i haven't seen or heard it, though. they are at least selling some outtake and rehearsal stuff on the bolin site i think, but i haven't done a thorough search. i would repurchase "mind transplant" with an additional 15 minute jam at the end, for sure. mike casinghino Posted April 9, 2006 Author Report Posted April 9, 2006 the rpm records(uk) cd version has a 20 minute jam added on,but it is oop. you could check the usual suspects: half.com,ebay,gemm, etc.,for a copy. Quote
jazzbo Posted April 9, 2006 Report Posted April 9, 2006 I've got the lp. . . . Yeah, it's funky jammy. I've got the other one, Snake Foot or something. . . which is not quite as good. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted April 9, 2006 Report Posted April 9, 2006 no funky snakefoot is sort of annoying. though i do enjoy that it employs moog bass on some tracks and some ARP-ish sounds, it sucks compositionally besides a track or two. odd that it sounds more disco-ey than mind transplant yet is an earlier album. i am looking for the first mouzon blue note right now on CD-the essence of mystery. that is the best of these three. BFrank Posted April 9, 2006 Report Posted April 9, 2006 I still have "The Essence of Mystery" on vinyl. Haven't listened to it in MANY years. I'm kinda afraid to listen to it as I might not even like it any more. BTW, anyone know who the personnel is? Al apparently plays several instruments, but not all. Quote
mike casinghino Posted April 11, 2006 Author Report Posted April 11, 2006 akanalog, i'll agree with you that -the essence of mystery- is also very good. but it is not the same type of recording as the wall of sound, mind transplant. toshiba has very recently reissued some cd's from their-blue note hits a new note series-moacir santos-saudade,for one. the essence of mystery was from this series, hopefully they will reissue the complete series. also ronnie foster-cheshire cat & gene harris-astral signal.
