I just found out that I might have to go out to Long Island next Wednesday/Thursday and was thinking about spending the weekend in New York City. I found a hotel that seems decently priced around 17th St. and Seventh Avenue, just a few blocks north of the west village. Is this a decent neighborhood to stay in (think its called Chelsea)? I don't plan on spending much time at the hotel, as I've never been to NYC before, so I was looking for a place in a convenient location. Or should I be looking somewhere else? It looked like a good spot since its fairly close to the bottom part of the island, as well as being accessible to the Midtown area.

If anyone has any feedback, I'd really appreciate it! Also, I was thinking about checking out Bill Frisell at the VV on Friday night. If anyone else was planning on being there, shoot me a PM....it would be cool to meet other people from the board!

it's a great area to stay. if you are young, even better. i think you are a younger man? AND....sorry-i should have worded this differently, as dmitry pointed out.... just trying to say chelsea is a gay-friendly area if that is of interest to you or anyone you are staying with. but yeah definitely a good area, IMO. i live three-ish blocks from there, so i can definitely vooch for the area. if you are hitting the village vanguard, that's a nice walk. and you are only a few blocks from the best used CD store downtown, IMO (academy, which is at 18th st between 5th and 6th aves-though there are pushy and smelly older men in the jazz section sometimes).

i mean no harm. i live around here. there is a very happening gay scene in chelsea. this info could be useful to a first time visitor.

ALSO....

if you are into art, sal...many of the good/interesting galleries are in chelsea north and west of where you are staying. should have mentioned that in my first post. sorry. but the galleries in chelsea are much more interesting than in soho, which is generally where you are told to check out galleries.

also if you stay on at the 17th street place, you have the meatpacking district a few blocks down and west with some nice places to eat and drink. or shop i guess....

AND...you also have that fat cat jazz club right down from the village vanguard....

though i do not think i can advocate that place. seems a little chummy-booking wise. you are also kinda reasonably close to the cornelia street cafe if the weather is nice for a walk and they have some good jazz sometimes (though beware of poetry).

:o

Seemed OK when I called last year in but maybe I caught it on a good day?

Or, you're one of the pushy and smelly old men.

Which hotel is that? There are/were welfare hotels in that area. Decently priced, if you don't mind the crack whores and junkies as neighbors. But hey, more money for used cds, right?

...what a strange path this thread has taken. Having known Sal for a few years, he is neither gay nor a junkie crack whore :P ....but he is a big fan of jazz! Have a great time in NYC Sal~

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I appreciate it. The name of the place is the Chelsea Inn. Typical one star joint, but again, I'm there for the location and not much else. I'm definitely not gay, but have never had any problems with any gay people, so if I'm in that part of town, it won't bother me.

i posed this ? about a half decent place to stay in nyc,was going to see a show,(have not made it yet). i got a recommendation for the-seafarers & international house-123 e 15th st.- they said it was clean, safe, moderately priced,& run by the lutheran church. if it is still there when i decide to go, i'll give it a shot.

have not been to nyc for awhile, but when i used to show up,i liked the jazz record center alot better than academy.just my opinion.
