Shawn Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 Does anybody know which tracks on this album feature Johnny Griffin? I know he's not on the entire record. Thanks. Quote
robviti Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 I believe Griff appears on three tracks: Fair Weather, Hotel 49, & Blue Thoughts. Quote
brownie Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 Checked my vinyl, jazzshrink has it right! Quote
AllenLowe Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 (edited) that is one of those recordings that, in my opinion, sounds like everyone (except Grffin) is off their game, including Baker, who seems to fall back on stock phrases; even Haig, who plays some nice solos, loses continuity more than once - I remember thinking, "what's wrong with this record" and I always had a feeling it was a bunch of junkies - and an alcoholic - having a bad day - Edited May 9, 2006 by AllenLowe Quote
Shawn Posted May 9, 2006 Author Report Posted May 9, 2006 Yeah Allen, I know what you mean. I used to own it years ago but dumped it pretty quickly once I realized how "un-thrilled" I was by it...now the Griffin nut in me wants me to at least replace those tracks via emusic. :-) Thanks! Shawn Quote
Big Al Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 Man, some pretty harsh comments about this. To each his own I guess. This is one of my favorite Baker albums. I love everyone's playing: Baker sounds confident and forceful throughout, Griffin comes out swinging and never lets up, Haig comps and solos as beautifully as I've ever heard, Chambers and PJJ are Chambers and PJJ, and I'd rather hear them on a bad day than some others at the top of their game.
