i see there was a record label called "whynot" which issued some stuff by walt dickerson and ted curson and chico freeman among others. it looks like it is mostly reissued on CD from japan and perhaps findable online though i imagine expensively.

is any of the material worth purchasing as far as anyone knows?

thank you.

I see Paul Secor is responding - we might duplicate info.

Why Not was started by Kenny Inaoka (and others?) around 1975. They were distributed by Trio (if not owned by them) and made a fine series of dates in good sound. Fine label.

Dickerson, Muhal, Air (2 records), Curson, Chico Freeman, all made good recordings for this label. I remember that Monty Waters also had one on whynot, but I never heard it.

The Dickerson (w. Wilbur Ware and Andrew Cyrille) is my favorite, but the others are all worth getting.

One Whynot I also like is the Charles Sullivan session 'Re-entry' with René McLean, Kenny Barron, Buster Williams and Billy Hart. Not sure it came out on CD. This was one of a rare Sullivan-led albums. Excellent trumpet player!
