Durium Posted July 8, 2006 Report Posted July 8, 2006 I'd like to recommend you the Japanese re-issue CD on the Audio-Park label titled Modern Clarinet Stylists 1947 - 1953 (APCD-6102). This CD contains the music of three clarinet players who restyled modern playing around 1950. Musicians like Buddy DeFranco, Stan Hasselgard en Putte Wickman. The recordings have never been reissued before or a rare to find items now. More infor to be found at this site Great! A year ago I was at a concert with Putte Wickman in Copenhagen. He played like a young God. He died half a year ago (January 2006) Read about this concert here. Keep swinging Durium Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 9, 2006 Report Posted July 9, 2006 (edited) Only thing "modern" is some of the players alive. Otherwise they are playing in styles "set" in the middle of the last century. Edited July 9, 2006 by Chuck Nessa Quote
garthsj Posted July 11, 2006 Report Posted July 11, 2006 (edited) Cynicism aside, let's agree that they were playing in a "modern" style in the middle of the last century ... at least these musicians played a style in which the clarinet actually sounded like a clarinet! Do you get to decide what the "clarinet actually sounded like"? Which system - they sound very different. Quote
JSngry Posted July 11, 2006 Report Posted July 11, 2006 Geez, I was under the assumption that if it came out of a clarinet, then it was what that particular clarinet sounded like being played by that particular player. Another illusion shattered! Quote

Do you get to decide what the "clarinet actually sounded like"? Which system - they sound very different. Whether it be the Boehm, Albert, Auler, or Simple System ... I have always preferred the clarinet sound of Anton Stadler ... that is the standard by which I, as the sole arbiter, decide what sounds like a clarinet or not! Edited July 11, 2006 by garthsj Quote
