SACD Discs, do they die???

I only have 4 SACD Dual Discs and one of them, "Gaucho" by Steely Dan, seems to have died or become corrupt or something, as my Sony SACD Player will only recognise the CD Layer. I've put in the other 3 SACD Dual Discs and I can access both Layers on all of them, which was obviously a great relief.

Anybody else have this kind of problem, as I'm 100% sure I used to be able to access both Layers on this Disc before. I notice that on the ones that work, there is a small "beep" when the Disc starts to spin, but no "beep" on "Gaucho".

I'd say it's the Sony player which is the reason for the playability problem. Have you tried the SACD layer on another player?

On the Audio Asylum there are frequent reports of SACD users which experience problems with Sony players, mainly with hybrid discs. These problems start after a couple of years. I have a 3 year old Sony SCD-XA777ES, and two of my 200+ SACDs started having problems in the past weeks. They played fine before on the Sony, and still play on my Philips DVD963SA.

Sony's gaining some noteriety for their SACD players failing on hybrids. Knock on wood... I've yet to have any failures on my Denon.

Thanks but it's just what I didn't want to hear, both the Player and the Disc are less that a year old, so I think i'll bring the Disc into the shop I bought it in and try it there, I was barely able to pay for one SACD Player never mind 2.

Try re-inserting it. Sometimes my 563-a doesn't detect the SACD layer, but a re-insert will usually clear this up.

FWIW, if it's really dead and you need a cheapie alternative in the future, I just installed and set-up an Oppo Digital DV-970HD universal player at my sister-in-law's house last weekend. This thing works like a charm! Best bang for the buck ever. Yeah, it converts DSD to PCM, but who cares if it sounds good? $149?? For $149, it's a very good "second system" player and a perfectly good one for most of us.

and much to my disappointment and complete f#@%'in annoyance it looks as if I am going to have to do without my system for a while as I brought the offending "Guacho" into the Store and put it in the exact same type of System and it picked it up as a SACD

So I'll have to take it in and let them "have a look at it", which means I'll probably never see it again.

Less than a year old........... which is the one good thing about this sorry incident.

Kevin, thanks for posting the link to that OPPO player...I HATE the Sony SACD player I have, I mean I DETEST the thing. This looks like just the machine I've been wishing for. Now all I have to do is get a job that actually pays a liveable wage....
