brownie Posted August 6, 2003 Report Posted August 6, 2003 I have not heard that album which was issued on Prestige. There is a Japanese CD of it that is at reasonable price in one of the Paris stores. The rhythm section is interesting (Hampton Hawes, Reggie Johnson, Lennie McBrowne). Was it one of those sessions where Stitt was ON? Or just another Stitt date? I have my share of these. Quote
jazzkrow Posted August 6, 2003 Report Posted August 6, 2003 Brownie: I've ordered the Prestige cd-"Goin Down Slow" from BMG that features the session you mentioned. The sound samples sounded vintage Stitt-soulful and sweet. It may come before I leave for Paris Aug. 20. If so, I can bring it with me to Paris for you to hear. Or I can order another copy from BMG for you sometime Let me know. Quote
brownie Posted August 6, 2003 Author Report Posted August 6, 2003 Jazzkrow. Didn't realize that the 'So Doggone Good' session was on the 'Goin' Down Slow' volume. Thanks for the offer but no need to bring that Stitt CD. I don't have the session with Hank Jones and strings either, so will get that one. The Time Out should be with you before you take off. Quote
JSngry Posted August 6, 2003 Report Posted August 6, 2003 Was it one of those sessions where Stitt was ON? Or just another Stitt date? In my opinion, it's the latter. The material is basic even by blowing session standards. Dangerously close to The Autopilot Zone, at least how I hear it. Hawes sounds pretty good though. Quote
Brad Posted August 6, 2003 Report Posted August 6, 2003 I'm with Jim on this one. Not a real good one. Quote
brownie Posted August 7, 2003 Author Report Posted August 7, 2003 Thanks for the comments. Will pass this one. No need to have one off Stitt. Quote
Brad Posted August 7, 2003 Report Posted August 7, 2003 Brownie, A couple of years ago, I picked up from Amazon France, Sonny sits in with Oscar Peterson. I don't know if you have that or if it interests you, but it's well worth picking up. His Verve stuff is quite good. Quote
brownie Posted August 7, 2003 Author Report Posted August 7, 2003 That Stitt/Peterson is part of my Stitt bootie. I have a Japanese LP of it. Stitt was ON there! No bad Stitt on Verve. Norman Granz must have had ways with him. Quote
