For those regulars checking the German www.zweitausendeins.de website, here some offers they just put on the web site:

- some 4€ cheap Sony/Columbia/CTI single disc CD's with lot of Miles and some nice 70's Fusion stuff from Stanley Clarke and alikes

- not sure if all but some 7€ new Prestige RvG's

- in total 72 of those Atlantic Jazz series CD's for 7€ incl Coltrane and Ornette Coleman as well as some Charles Mingus.

- Some Universal re-issues as well for 7€ from Brasilian Emarcy branch..(not sure which are good, so maybe some expert can have a look...hey Marcus, what about you <_< ) and those Impulse Best of's (not that I'm personally looking for them)

....still no sign of the Henderson Milestone box set... :(

Cheers, Tjobbe

Sounds nice. The search function doesn't find those yet, unfortunately. :(

I'll have to grab the Sony discs that I don't have yet (especially the CTIs).

Damn! I really want that!

I wonder if they'll add dozens of Fantasy Jazz €2.99 titles to their programme AGAIN come September. This sale is great but at some point I'll go broke buying all that stuff.

Which atlantics would that be, tjobbe? The only *really* good ones are those in jewel cases with clear trays and piano keys on the spine (prolonged over the inside of the traycard.

I have several others, both from the swiss (? those with Claude Nobs' little note an never no recording dates given) and german digipacks - they're ok, but I only pick those up when I see them on sale...

That's the "Atlantic Masters" (or "Warner Masters" or "Elektra Masters"), then, I guess (the German series). As I said, they're ok, and with many fine albums, they're the only way to go, as the US series (jewel case series with piano keys) does not include that many albums (yet? hopefully!).

Some fine Atlantics I have as digipacks are Roland Kirk/Al Hibbler "A Meeting of Times", one of the two Sphere albums (both are fine, it seems, but I never saw the other one), Carmen McRae's "Great American Songbook", and for those inclined to like some grease, there's "Double Barrelled Soul" by Brother Jack McDuff and David "Fathead" Newman. Oh, and Eddie Harris' "Instant Death" is a great stoopid little thingie... but those EH albums are covered better on Collectables (and on some old Rhino twofers, prob. all OOP now, alas). The two Max Roach discs, "Members Don't Git Weary" and "Lift Every Voice and Sing" are fine, too, but likely rather inessential - there's lots of better Roach around.

these as per Amazon.de list (same as the ones listed at jpc for 8€ as well)

http://www.amazon.de/gp/feature.html/028-3...3?docId=1608501

Cheers, Tjobbe

EDIT: and I fear they are all Digi's as have been the ones Amazon UK sold recently

Ah, I see... some pretty nice ones included, most of them I have as part of some box sets, but here are some favourites:

- Kirk: Inflated Tear (essential!)

- Mingus at Antibes (very good one)

- Mingus: Tonight at Noon

- Ray Charles: Genius After Hours, The Great Ray Charles (and all others...)

- all Cotranes, of course... (some/most of them are in the US series, however...)

- Mingus: Pithecanthropus Erectus (essential!)

- all Ornettes (again some/most are in the US series, too)

- Herbie Mann: At the Village Gate (still a great one, despite all the crap he did and the bad rep he got...)

- Jimmy Scott: The Source (terrific!)

- Mann/Evans: Nirvana (a nice footnote in the Evans discography)

- Sonny Criss: Criss Craft

Some of these could be the US versions, no? I am not sure if I ever saw Lateef's "Detroit" of MJQ's "Porgy & Bess" and a few others as digipacks. Also - if the jpgs are reliable - some others may be the US ones, too (Coltrane Jazz and Coltrane's Sound definitely exist in such editions, for instance).

Anyway, for someone who doesn't own the Coltrane, Mingus and Ornette Atlantic boxes, there's plenty of nice stuff here!

tjobbe, that's the Sphere I have, too, the other one I still miss.

now that you are saying it: Lateef is no digipack IIRC. of the ca 50 they had at 2001 about 5 I would say were no digipacks... will report in more detail tommorow...

someone like me :)

btw, its not sonny criss but chris connor :(

edit: another round of introspection reveals that 5 out of 50 was maybe somewhat pessimistic... will report again

Ouch! I was just finishing "This is Criss" when I posted... fine one!

Now I did want to give :tup for Chris Connor, however!

Just playing this one again:

f94569pvo5g.jpg

Some nice things, but some rather corny tunes, too... not essential, and not all that greasy, either... at least on the first half, which is how far I've played it yet... second half is tunes by Newman (2) and Newman-McDuff (1), so it should get a bit more bite there.

As for Chris Connor again: here first Atlantic album is terrific, and most of her mid-fifties albums are great. I have her Bethlehem recordings and some of these early Atlantics and enjoy them all. She's one of those rather thin-voiced, cool song-specialists... if you happen to enjoy June Christy or Peggy Lee, go for it. The missis will like it, too... ;)

funny thing is, seriously, when I saw "Chris Craft" first at the shop three hours ago (after having greatly enjoyed clifford jordan's spellbound this morning) I thought/hoped it was Jordan's Cliff Craft in the first half second

I have to correct myself, I was at their Nuernberg store yesterday and all Atlantics seemed to be Digipack editions.

No new Fantasy/ZYX titles this time around, I wonder if the sale has ended? Or maybe they'll add another bunch of those inbetween two "Merkhefts". Speaking of which, the new one is already printed and available and the search function finds all the new stuff now.

i thought the sale had essentially ended, in DÜsseldorf nothing new since the bunch that came with the Reste Merkheft (but they still have lots and lots of stuff in stock only some of which is available every day...) in Cologne they already more or less gave up weeks ago

another bunch in between merkhefts sounds like a fine idea though :)

I thought that they had finally found the time to catalog all those ZYX titles instead of just

throwing them into the bargain bins. At least that would explain why so many of those made

it into their "official" programme a few weeks ago. We'll just have to see if more of those show up. :)

here in duesseldorf most of the atlantics were digipacks but some (essentially those suspected above Lateef, MJQ, Ornette on Tenor...) were not (piano keys = only about 10 piano keys in total? then those were the editions with the piano keys) didn't have much time to look through all of them (for some strange reason they put the digipacks in a special section and mixed the pianokeys with all the other CDs...)... if anyone is interested in a specific CD i can look up which type it is, of course...!

Stephan of 2001 says they are continuously looking for more ZYX/Fantasy titles and I quote from a mid-August email "...will surely offer more items in the near future - but probably not in this large amount as right now."

So, I'll save my cash for now and wait for the next batch of ZYX goodies.

thank you! ... I would say about 30 percent of the amount they have out at the moment additionally would be fine for the moment :)

A tricky thing about ordering Fantasy/ZYX discs at 2001 is that some discs are available as both regular OJC and OJC20 editions (the latter with often crappy remastering). Even if the online info does not show the "remastered in 20bit" info they may send you the OJC20 version, because their internal item number for both versions is the same.

When I visited their store in Munich in July, I found a regular OJC of Chet Baker's "Once upon a summertime". I already have the OJC20, which sounds quite poor, so I wanted to try if the regular remastering sounds better. I went to the counter with a dozen CDs (empty boxes), and the guy went to the back to get the CDs. I paid, and only later when I was already on the way home I noticed he had replaced the Chet OJC with a sealed copy of the OJC20
