xybert Posted January 11, 2015 Report Posted January 11, 2015 Bump. I'm only really becoming conscious of Rose recently after starting to explore the Bud Powell 1953 stuff. Fascinating. The video in post #14 was amazing... i wonder how often he listened back to stuff. Putting aside the historical value of his collection, it's just, a fascinating way to lead a life as a music fan. "Here's my collection. What? No, i don't have a copy of that particular Mingus album, but i do have these..." Quote

Big Beat Steve Posted January 12, 2015 Report Posted January 12, 2015 I've always loved the depictions of record collecting/obsessing in the comics of Crumb and Pekar. What made me wonder in quite a few of these (and similar ones ...), though: We all grow older and have or develop our own (sometimes age-related) weaknesses (and AFAIK some drawings may have been a way of Robert Crumb psych-treating himself )) but how come these ultra-collectors are SO OFTEN depicted as always being people past middle age and all bald, fuzzy-bearded or ill-shaven, heavily bespectacled (invariably short-sighted), sloppily garbed and bad-teethed nerds that look like they never ever left their record hoarding rooms (or rather, basements), not even to breathe a sniff of fresh air every once in a blue moon? Are they (or us) that bad and removed from the world?? Granted I am getting ahead in years too and my eyesight isn't quite what it used to be in my younger years anymore either, but is it only because I also have been moving around in rockabilly and western swing collecting circles too that fanatic dyed-in-the-wool collectors who are more of the "ducktail greaser, leather jacket and turned-up jeans" or "hawaii shirt and chino trousers" faction are not unknown to me at all? Aren't there any other typical collecting characters but those basement geeks to be caricatured? After all ... depending on what kind of BOP you like to listen to, it can be this ... ... just as much as it can be this ... :g Quote
xybert Posted January 13, 2015 Report Posted January 13, 2015 Ha ha... Crumb sure doesn't shy away from self deprecation. That particular image is, yeah, autobiographical, but playing on comic book tropes to create an image that's part Tales From The Crypt, part 'Young Romance' comics. I guess it plays to that cliched 'obsessive record collector nerd' image, too. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted January 13, 2015 Author Report Posted January 13, 2015 As I stated in an earlier post, these tapes if not rescued will turn to dust in a damp basement. That would be a crime against the arts. I'm taking 1 dollar donations until I have that million. Seriously, call me crazy, if I ever won the lottery, I would buy the collection and give the rest of the winnings to charity. http://titleofmagazine.com/2010/01/29/boris-rose-king-of-the-bootleggers/ Quote
