Durium Posted September 12, 2006 Report Posted September 12, 2006 ROY HARGROVE - NOTHING SERIOUS A very good album. It seems as if Roy didn't forget his roots. Great ! Keep swinging Durium Quote
kh1958 Posted September 12, 2006 Report Posted September 12, 2006 Yes, a very nice record, probably his best to date. Quote
GA Russell Posted September 12, 2006 Report Posted September 12, 2006 Since you think so highly of it, I'll add it to my Your Music queue. Quote
shaft Posted September 13, 2006 Report Posted September 13, 2006 I'll give it another try. It did not catch on on the first listen. Get back to you;-) Shaft Quote
shaft Posted September 13, 2006 Report Posted September 13, 2006 Hi again (was I ever gone ;-) Well it catches up on me. Some serious playing from Roy here. I remembered that it was the Sax-guy that put me off a little(yes just a little). His name is Justin Robinson and not really my cup of tea here. But the album is on the whole very listenable and even enjoyable most of the time. My favourite would be track no2 "A day in Vienna". /Shaft Quote
kh1958 Posted September 13, 2006 Report Posted September 13, 2006 Since you think so highly of it, I'll add it to my Your Music queue. Hard to go wrong for $5.99! I've been going to see Roy live since he was a teenager in Dallas and always been frustrated by his recordings, which never seemed to capture the fiery playing I witnessed. This one finally captures at least some of what I've heard. There's some pretty nice Slide Hampton on the record as well. Quote
sal Posted September 13, 2006 Report Posted September 13, 2006 (edited) I remembered that it was the Sax-guy that put me off a little(yes just a little). His name is Justin Robinson and not really my cup of tea here. I've seen Roy several times live. I think he's an extremely talented and original soloist, and his rhythm section burns. But I share your sentiments about Justin Robinson. Just too academic for me. He tries to play as many notes as he can in as many different patterns as possible, and doesn't really seem to be speaking from the heart. I can work with this in the live setting, but not too sure how this will work on record. Edited September 13, 2006 by sal Quote
