monkboughtlunch Posted September 24, 2006 Report Posted September 24, 2006 What's up with the first track on Bobby Hutcherson's Happenings appearing in mono on the new RVG CD? The remaining tracks appear to have some stereo separation. Quote
sidewinder Posted September 24, 2006 Report Posted September 24, 2006 I've just checked the original stereo issue of the LP and 'Aquarian Moon' (I'm assuming that is also the first track on the CD) is clearly in stereo, with Joe Chambers clearly on the RH channel. Strange.. Quote
Daniel A Posted September 24, 2006 Report Posted September 24, 2006 I'm not sure track #1 is all that different from the rest of the album. Stereo separation is understated all through, allthough the ride cymbal appears to be somewhat panned. The original LP had marginally better stereo spread. Quote
sidewinder Posted September 24, 2006 Report Posted September 24, 2006 Incidentally, this is one Blue Note where I've never heard a very good copy of the original mono LP. There seems to be a distortion problem with this title that is not present on the stereos. Stereo is the one to get. Now back to the RVG CD .. Quote
Daniel A Posted September 24, 2006 Report Posted September 24, 2006 You beat me, Sidewinder! Anyway, just because it was you I'll clarify my earlier comment: my copy is a Liberty pressing. No ear in dead wax, allthough I'm not sure there could be any for 4231. Quote

Sounds pretty nice tho' Quote
Claude Posted September 24, 2006 Report Posted September 24, 2006 (edited) I just listened with headphones to the TOCJ-4231 CD released in 2000, and the stereo separation on track 1 (Aquarian moon) is more reduced than on the other tracks. On track 1, vibes, piano and bass are all in the center, while the drums are on the right. On the other tracks, the piano comes from the left channel. Edited September 24, 2006 by Claude Quote
Bill Nelson Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 Or, while running the tape remaster for 'Aquarian Moon', Rudy replaced the spent batteries in his Beltones. Quote
