kenny weir
I got the four-disc Eddie Condon set The Classic Sessions 1928-1949 a few days ago and am enjoying the hell out of it. Incredible music, almost all of which I have never heard before. The sound is superb. My question is this: The "classic sessions" signifies that complete sessions are included and I would like to know is that is, indeed, the case. Obviously, with just a couple of the Town Hall tracks included, that aspect of Condon's activities is covered only piecemeal. brownie
The JSP Eddie Condon box is quite amazing but it is not complete. The liner notes does not mention it is a 'complete' set. Missing for instance is the first Commodore session from January 1938 (a Condon-led group with Bobby Hackett, George Brunis, Bud Freeman, etc...), and there is only 'Embraceable You' from the second Commodore date. One of the best JSP compilation.

I suspect this just right for me - a whole bunch of music that to get complete sessions of would take a lot of time and helluva lot more money. I love the Dixieland/Chicago thing, but I'm not THAT far gone on it.
jazzbo
I'm that far gone on it, myself. The JSP is a really nice selection, but it's not the Condon I would necessarily select item by item, and it misses so much! But yeah, I can see your point. Harold_Z
What Lon and Brownie said pretty much sums it up for me as well. In SOME cases the sessions ARE complete. The first session on the set (McKenzie/Condon) IS complete most others are just a sampling. The entire Bud Freeman Decca lp "Wolverine Jazz" is there and the entire Bud Columbia "Comes Jazz"lp. The Rhythmakers is just a sampling, but if you can find the whole set - don't miss it. There is one Art Hodes session with 3 of the 4 tunes recorded that date. AFAIK that is the first appearance of any of those 4 sides on cd and maybe even lp. I would love to find that 4th tune !
