Man with the Golden Arm Posted December 7, 2006 Report Posted December 7, 2006 I recently settled up a playlist of mostly e-music grabs from the Ubiquity label along with a few from a disc called 'Vital Organs'. onehundrednineteenminutes&fifteensecondsofpuresalaappp! Quote
Noj Posted December 7, 2006 Report Posted December 7, 2006 Nice list, MWTGA! "Hector" by the Village Callers is a personal favorite. "Ah, Hector, you're our manager, but you sure are ugly Hector! Tienes la cara de lastima, Hector! Como estas? Horrible! You know?" Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted December 7, 2006 Report Posted December 7, 2006 heh, thanks ... love that Hector too. rolls right into (tip o' the fedora) JSangry's Darondo: "Legs"! just sampled a few from the above Soul Fires and looks like another platter is in the mix. and here I was only gonna do emusic for a month. Soulstation1 Posted December 10, 2006 Author Report Posted December 10, 2006 any other fav funky / rare groove comps? Quote
John B Posted December 10, 2006 Report Posted December 10, 2006 any other fav funky / rare groove comps? This is one of my favorites: The Funky 16 Corners - released by Stones Throw. Quote
John B Posted December 10, 2006 Report Posted December 10, 2006 I'd also recommend Cold Heat: Heavy Funk Rarities 1968-1974, Vol. 1, which is their "follow up" to 16 Corners as well as their Midwest Funk and Texas Funk compilations. Their website says that Funky 16 Corners has recently been remastered using more original source tapes. Quote
Noj Posted December 10, 2006 Report Posted December 10, 2006 The entire Funkaphonix series on Electrostatic and the Natural Funky series on Soul Patrol are my favorites. They go out of stock fast on Dusty Groove, but they're all worth checking out. I also like the BGP comps such as King Funk or Westbound Funk or Superfunk or Get Your Lie Straight. Quote
John B Posted December 10, 2006 Report Posted December 10, 2006 (edited) The Numero Group label has been releasing some fantastic discs that, while not purely funk, would be worth your while to explore. I love all of their releases that I have heard: Good God! A Gospel Funk Hymnal Cult Cargo: Belize City Boil Up Eccentric Soul: The Bandit Label Eccentric Soul : The Capsoul Label Eccentric Soul : The Deep City Label Edited December 11, 2006 by John B Quote
Noj Posted December 10, 2006 Report Posted December 10, 2006 I haven't heard of those John, now I'm on the hunt! There's also some cool 2cd sets called The First Days Of Funk from the Electrostatic folks, but they're a bit spottier than the Funkaphonix discs. Black Chains & Exhaust is another good one. The Dusty Fingers series on Strictly Break Records is fun too. In addition, they put out those sample-give-away records with songs sampled by De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, and others. Quote
John B Posted December 10, 2006 Report Posted December 10, 2006 (edited) I haven't heard of those John, now I'm on the hunt! Do a label search for Numero Group over at the Aquariusrecords website. They have sound clips for all of these discs. I really think you'd like them, given what I know of your tastes. The label puts out a very high quality release. Lots of research and well written liner notes, too. Edited December 10, 2006 by John B Quote
