For the past few days I've been enjoying the Tina Brooks Mosaic 4 Lp set which sounds much much better than the corresponding BN Connoisseur cds. Unfortunately I don't have any original pressings to compare to the Mosaic, but some of you do. What's your take on the quality of Mosaic vinyl in general?

Did some comparisons a couple of years ago (the Herbie Nichols and the Grant Green/Sonny Clark sets).

I listened to the Lexington Herbie Nichols then a King Japan LP and finally the Mosaic vinyls.

Could not detect any major differences (which was not the case with the badsounding BN twofer reissue) but the most natural piano I heard was on the King Japan reissue from 1983 (pre-digital?).

As for the Grant Greens, the only originals I had were the Japanese Kings and those also had a very slight edge on the Mosaics.

I love the Kings! They are still in their original shrinkwraps and look allnew 20 years after they were purchased!

And they sound magnificient!

Generally very good indeed. I would second what Brownie said above. The original LPs (especially deepgroove monos) usually have a bit more depth and better soundstage but Mosaic vinyl tends to be quieter with regards to pressing noise. I'm a fan of the sound of the Tina Brooks set you mention.

I would also agree that the Kings are the most natural sounding of the lot.

originals mastered by RVg tend to have midrange boost which the Mosaics don't have. Mosaics probably closer to original master tapes in they probably have less eq than what Rudy did. Bottom on Japanese pressings doesn't seem right to me. something a little off tonally to my ears.
