mrjazzman Posted January 4, 2007 Report Posted January 4, 2007 Hibbler was with Duke in the 40's. To all you experts on Ellington and his vocalists, or on Hibbler, Did he ever sing "I didn't know about you".................. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 4, 2007 Report Posted January 4, 2007 I know for sure he sang it on that record with Roland Kirk. . . . I'm pretty certain he sang it with the Ellington Orchestra as well. Will look for evidence. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 4, 2007 Report Posted January 4, 2007 Hmmm. . . it doesn't show up HERE: http://www.depanorama.net/voc.htm Quote
brownie Posted January 4, 2007 Report Posted January 4, 2007 The Hibbler rendition on 'A Meeting of the Times' (on the Kirk/Hibbler reunion album on Atlantic) is superb. Don't recall him singing that with the Ellington band. Joya Sherrill was featured on that tune several times... Quote
mrjazzman Posted January 4, 2007 Author Report Posted January 4, 2007 jazzbo, brownie Before I posed the question I listened to sound samples of the song from "A Meeting of the Times" on amazon and amg. I heard no singing. Im not a hibbler fan but a co-worker approached me and said his father was a big fan of Hibbler and could not find that song. So, if you guys say he sings that cut, that's good enough for me, now I can purchase it..................... Quote

jazzbo Posted January 4, 2007 Report Posted January 4, 2007 Damn it Guy, I can hear it in my head too! Thanks for checking. Quote
Ted O'Reilly Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 Using the Lord 6.0 discography as a reference, Al Hibbler seems not to have ever recorded it. Joya Sherrill did it a lot, and the Kirk album version is instrumental. Quote
EKE BBB Posted January 8, 2007 Report Posted January 8, 2007 Hmmm. . . it doesn't show up HERE: http://www.depanorama.net/voc.htm No reference of Al Hibler singing "I didn't know about you" with the Ellington Orchestra found on Timner (4th Edition). The song was quite usual in the band's book in the mid-40s, but with vocals by Joya Sherrill or Betty Roché. Quote
