Durium Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 Tiger Rag This 1917 tune is one of the most performed and recorded tunes in jazz I guess, played seriously, violated and mutilated by hundreds of (jazz) bands. If you like or hate it, beware of the Tiger. Tiger Rag Keep swinging Durium Quote
Harold_Z Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 Thanks Durium, That ODJB clip is priceless. I had read about that, but had given up hope of ever seeing it. A lot of tunes use the chord changes. Duke Ellington, for one, used the Tiger Rag chord changes often. Also not to be missed is Jelly Roll Morton's lengthy demonstration in the Library of Congress recordings. Quote
John L Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 Yes, and Jelly Roll Morton's demonstration sheds some doubt on the conjecture repeated at this site that Nick La Roca wrote the tune. Quote
Dan Gould Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 With our recent teen addition, I was afraid this thread was about Tiger Beat. Quote

I guess Nick got the copyright in first. I (more than) suspect that's what happened with a lot of early jazz tunes. W.C. Handy is another guy who was smart enough to be fast on the copyright draw. Same thing on the blues scene. Quote
