The Prestige RVG remaster of Oliver Nelson's "Screamin the Blues" came out recently.

The remaster job by Rudy is superb and the playing of all concerned-Nelson, Dolphy, and especially Richard Williams-is dynamite.

Williams is a monster here-blistering. The man never got his due-and only one session under his own name,

New Horn in Town (on Candid). The CDs purchase is well worth it just to hear Williams blow...

Can't recommend this CD highly enough. It's my favorite small group Nelson CD....

I need to get this one soon.

Jeff, I'm surprised you like this one more than "Blues & the Abstract Truth"! I thought that was everybody's favorite small group Nelson.

PM sent to you, Sal!

Do you think the Blues and the Abstract Truth is a small group session as opposed to the sextet on Screamin the Blues?

Otherwise, I plead guilty as you're right.....

that one's pretty easy to find. less than six euros here... for those who haven't heard it, it's a completely different oliver nelson, in my opinion. not a bad one, per se, but positively different from anything on impulse or prestige. if you enjoy nelson with a vocalist, i say check out the material with etta jones. i really dig those.

Unlike some other Prestige RVGs, the Oliver Nelson CD sounds good, but not better than the mastering on the Dolphy Complete Prestige box set. No reason to upgrade if you have an earlier CD version.

Nice date. The vinyl sound was good and punchy too.

Very punchy. One of the best sound of the Prestige vinyls!

My copy has spun a lot of times and is still pristine!

Agreed. I was amazed how good my New Jazz sounds. Very BIG overall sound, incredible fidelity and way better than usual with NJ. I'll bet the Esquire pressing sounds great too.

Just as good and thrilling was 'Straight Ahead, a sort of companion piece to 'Screamin' the Blues' with the same crew but without Richard Williams! Roy Haynes' drumming on those two was outstanding!

Also on Prestige/New Jazz.

Damn Brownie! :D Straight Ahead is one of the few Dolphy on Prestige/New Jazz I miss. (Obviously I have that crappy CD Dolphy Box Set, :( nice photos on the booklet anyway :g

Other than "Blues And The Abstract Truth" (not sure I would call this a small group album?), my favorite Oliver Nelson small group album is:

MEET OLIVER NELSON on Prestige/New Jazz with great playing by Oliver, Kenny Dorham & Ray Bryant.

If you don't know this one I suggest you check it out.
