The Magnificent Goldberg Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 You could do a lot worse than play some Charles Kynard on the programme, Ghost, particularly side 1 of "Where it's at", which is all church material. Kynard was a regular church organist, as well as jazz musician, and his stuff has a lot of the right feel. Professor Herman Stevens (on Savoy) and Rev Maceo Woods (On Vee-Jay) made a lot of Gospel organ records which influenced jazz organists. MG Quote
AllenLowe Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 yes, yes, yes, for Deena Epstein - essential - also, any Document collection of old religious recordings, particularly from the 1920s and 1930s - truth is, contemporary gospel/jazz/syntheisis is too damn slick for me - and don't forget the first gospel pianist, Arizona Dranes - Quote
ghost of miles Posted March 30, 2007 Author Report Posted March 30, 2007 Howdy GOM, I only just found this thread... I don't know nuthin' about spirituals, but a lady I know who just retired is a member of a singing group in the Denver area called "The Spirituals Project." Here's their website: http://spiritualsproject.org/ Yes! I came across that website while I was working on the show & plan to link to it on the info page for the program. Simon, thanks for the rec. MG, I've already taped the program, but I had so much material that I plan to do a followup next year & will take that Charles Kynard into account. Quote

alocispepraluger102 Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 with ayler and trane and duke alone, you could do a 3 months of shows. Quote
AllenLowe Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 (edited) well, let's just say it sounds to me like pop-gospel - (referring to my previous post about the slick) - Edited March 30, 2007 by AllenLowe Quote
ghost of miles Posted April 4, 2007 Author Report Posted April 4, 2007 (edited) Howdy GOM, I only just found this thread... I don't know nuthin' about spirituals, but a lady I know who just retired is a member of a singing group in the Denver area called "The Spirituals Project." Here's their website: http://spiritualsproject.org/ Perhaps they could be of help somehow... Good luck! Here's another good site (multimedia version/relative of site above? Probably the same project, as they're both coming out of Denver) that I found & forgot to mention... will be linking to this one as well. Edited April 4, 2007 by ghost of miles Quote
