brownie Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 Chicago smoking ban may cloud jazz lovers' loyalty Since the article mentions jazz fans from Paris, it should be added that there has been a smoking ban in most public places throughout France since February 1. Few complaints so far! Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 Cigarette in hand and saxophone on lap, jazz icon Dexter Gordon seems lost in thought, while smoke billows gently from his lips. It rises in a cloud above him -- white, misty patterns set against an ebony, late-night backdrop. The iconic 1948 shot, by celebrated jazz photographer Herman Leonard, has come to signify the nocturnal ambience and romance of the music. It ain't 1948 anymore, folks. I applaud the measure and it will not hurt business one bit. Quote

I suspect they are smokers themselves. I love coming home not smelling like an ashtray. The only downside I can see is that it makes the streets a lot noisier at night, as all the smokers go to the sidewalk outside the bars/clubs in groups to get their fixes. That's actually a small part of why I am moving. I have been woken up by loud, drunk smokers outside my place at 4 am on far too many Thursday nights/Friday mornings. Quote
