2007 CFL season

Toronto Argonauts 35....Hamilton Tiger-Cats 22

The score flattered the Ti-Cats.

Picking up Printers was smart move for the Ti-Cats, but won't help this this year. It certainly improves the CFL overall (or will next year for sure). I can't wait to see Printers go head to head next season against Michael Bishop. I like Bishop but we'll have to see how he handles the big test next week against B.C. (in Vancouver).

The Argos have traded Mike McMahon to the Als. Why the Als would want him after they have just obtained Jason Maas is a mystery to me.

The Als won with Marcus Brady starting against the Lions, which I have to consider a big upset even though the Lions were starting Jarious Jackson at QB.

So I have to think that within a couple of weeks the Als are going to let go a QB or two.

By the way, the article mentions that McMahon turned down the $720,000. NFL salary to play in the CFL. I really respect that. No wonder he was grousing that he wasn't playing. Not that he deserved to be.

Matt Dominguez hurt his knee in the game this week. He'll be out 2-3 weeks, unless it's a torn ACL, in which case his season is over.

At this moment I'm the only person on the board. That's only happened once before to my knowledge.

The things you learn on the internet. Tonight I learned that Britney Spears is an anagram for Presbyterian!

Now to business: Matt Dominguez suffered a second degree sprain of his mcl, and is out a minimum of 4-6 weeks, and maybe the whole season.

The Riders are in first place, but I can't see them staying there without him. Yo Murphy is coming back off the injured list, so he will help. And the Eskimos are going to have to really improve to keep the Riders out of the playoffs.

There's a story in Edmonton about Rahim Abdullah, but I don't know what it is. As far as I could tell from the Eskimos broadcasts I've listened to, he's good. But apparently he got into the coach's doghouse. They paid him but wouldn't let him attend practices or meetings.

He retained an attorney. So they cut him yesterday. Now he has the opportunity to sign with a team that might win the Grey Cup.

Really bad weekend. All four games stunk. Oh well. I believe that a major appeal of sports is that the product, the quality of the ballgame, is not guaranteed. I think the reason good ballgames are so exhilarating is that you never know ahead of time how good they will be. You appreciate a good ballgame because not all of them are good!

I listened to all of Friday's game and parts of each of Saturday's three games.

Edmonton Eskimos 47....Montreal Alouettes 28

http://sports.canada.com/default.asp?c=can.../AJN4102480.htm

Ricky Ray broke Warren Moon's team record for yards passing.

Jason Maas came in in the fourth quarter for the Als and looked like a world beater, leading the team on two TD drives.

Calgary Stampeders 44....Saskatchewan Roughriders 22

http://sports.canada.com/default.asp?c=can.../AJN4102611.htm

The game was sold out with plenty of Rider fans. Greg Peterson, former Stamps DB now the analyst on their broadcasts, likes to point out that more Saskatchewanians live in metro Calgary than in any city in Saskatchewan!

Winnipeg Blue Bombers 34....Hamilton Tiger-Cats 4

http://sports.canada.com/default.asp?c=can.../AJN4102648.htm

Casey Printers started for the Ticats. Kevin Glenn was hurt and may be out for a while. The Bombers' backup QB is Ryan Dinwiddie, and I have no confidence in him.

British Columbia Lions 40....Toronto Argonauts 7

The Argos have won four games this year, but three of them were against the Ticats. They were awful last night. At this rate the Eskimos will cross over for the playoffs.

Jarious Jackson, the third string QB, is now 3-1 as a starter for the Lions!

Surprise! Give all the credit to the Ticats' backup QB Ritchie Williams. Casey Printers started, but left the game in the second quarter with a pulled left hamstring. In the last minute Calgary moved down the field to the Hamilton seven to score the winning TD, but Burris was shaken up on second down; and Akili Smith was intercepted in the endzone on third down.

I remember that when he was with the Lions Printers first hurt his shoulder and then his toe. Now we learn that he pulled his hamstring in the Kansas City camp. I'm not sure that he can remain healthy enough to justify his big contract. Williams, on the other hand, has looked great the few times the Ticats have put him in the game. Williams may be the Ticat QB of the future, not Printers.

Nick Setta went 5 for 5 in the FG department.

The Argos' victory yestserday really puts life back into their chances to make the playoffs. Of course, three of their five wins have been against the Ticats, but now the Argo fans have some reason to hope.

In the West, none of the teams are out of it, now that the Eskimos have swept the Als the past two weeks.

Here are the current standings:

Reviewing the standings above, I see that the Riders have lost three straight without Matt Dominguez.

*****

The Stamps announced today that Henry Burris will not need surgery on his dislocated shoulder. He will be out two weeks, and then be on a week to week basis, meaning they don't want to end his season by putting him on the nine-week list. His backup Akili Smith hasn't shown much thus far, but really hasn't been given the chance to show much either.

The Argos signed Troy Davis today. He has been out of work since the Eskimos cut him in the off season. He may be rusty; but on the other hand the layoff may make him the healthiest running back in the league. He's old, but I don't think he is washed up. I think the Esks let him go for salary cap reasons and because they cleaned house over the winter.

During the Bombers broadcast, Bob Irving said that Ricky Ray was gone for the season with his separated right (throwing) shoulder. With rookie Stephane LeFors in there, I don't see how the last place Eskimos can expect to climb into third place or cross over to the East. But what makes it interesting is that third-place Calgary has apparently lost Henry Burris for the season, so they may not win again either.

Thanksgiving Day results:

Montreal Alouettes 27....Hamilton Tiger-Cats 19

The loss eliminates the Ticats.

Saskatchewan Roughriders 33....Calgary Stampeders 21

http://sports.canada.com/default.asp?c=can.../AJN4106739.htm

Akili Smith started for the Stamps and showed nothing. He was replaced at halftime by Ben Sankey, who turned in a decent performance, leading the Stamps on two TD drives.

The last I had heard of Sankey, he was Jarious Jackson's backup at BC, so how and when he wound up with the Stamps I don't know. Maybe this indicates that Buck Pierce will soon return for BC.

It is likely that neither Calgary nor Edmonton will host a playoff game. The last time that happened was in the 1950s.

The Stamps cut Akili Smith today. This has got me thinking: Was Doug Flutie the last player anyone had ever heard of before to succeed in the CFL?

Henry Burris may indeed return before the end of the season.

The Argos owners are looking into ways to purchase an NFL team and relocate it to Toronto. They want to do it before someone else who doesn't care about the Argos and the CFL does it.

Vinnie Testaverde joined Carolina Wednesday and led them to victory today over Arizona. I was reminded of how Casey Printers and Jason Maas needed a week-plus with their new teams before they saw any game action. Apparently a winning NFL gameplan can be pretty simple compared to a CFL gameplan.

Lenny Kravitz will perform at the Grey Cup halftime this year. I guess they have run out of Canadians to hire.

I recall hearing on a broadcast last year that hiring The Black Eyed Peas to perform at the 2005 Grey Cup game was criticized by some because they weren't Canadian either.

Sean Millington is coming out of retirement again to play for the Argos. The guy is 39 years old, and ruptured his achilles tendon the last time he came out of retirement in 2005. I think the whole idea is a joke. If there is room for another running back, the team should hire a young guy. and give him a chance to compete for the Grey Cup.

I also wonder why the Argos feel they could use him, seeing as how Robert Edwards is doing so well. Millington is a Canadian, so maybe it is an import ratio issue.

Khari Jones signed a contract with the Bombers and promptly retired as a Bomber.

It always looked to me like he hurt himself and kept it a secret so that he could collect the big money he couldn't earn. Reminds me of Jason Maas. Maybe their shoulder injuries were just coincidences to their signing big contracts, but once they signed for the big money, they couldn't perform on the field.

Ben Sankey, not Henry Burris, started for the Stamps. No explanation was given. Maybe Burris aggravated the injury to his left (non-throwing) shoulder last week, or maybe the Stamps are conceding second place to the Riders and are keeping Burris out of danger till the Western semi-final.

The Bombers play the Argos next week. A win by the Bombers will clinch first place for them.

I tuned in late in the second quarter. The Ticats are so inept I turned it off in the middle of the fourth quarter.

BC, Sask and Calgary have clinched playoff spots. Sask still has a mathematical chance of finishing first. In the East, Winnipeg has clinched second. Edmonton still has a mathematical chance to cross over and displace Montreal for the third Eastern playoff spot.
