Guest Bill Barton Posted July 19, 2009 Report Posted July 19, 2009 Bill, I listened to the above this morning. Very good program, thanks. In particular, the Perry Robinson cut The Traveler was really interesting. Another wonderful piece of music that I've never heard of. I apparently lead a sheltered life. You're welcome and thanks. Yes, that's an amazing record. It's shameful that it has never been reissued on CD. So, no, not a sign that you lead a sheltered life as it's pretty close to impossible to find a copy of The Traveler. bill's show is essential jazz listening. his grasp of the subject and love for the idiom are rarely equalled. Thanks, aloc! You da man... Quote

AllenLowe Posted July 20, 2009 Report Posted July 20, 2009 Bill, is that Tipton quartet the one that was a memorial to Billy? just wondering because I recently found a Bill Tipton album from the 1950s - unfortunately, he/she turns out to be a pretty mediocre piano player. Quote

I've got both of Tipton's albums, and can confirm that the Billy Tipton story is definitely more interesting that Billy Tipton the musician. Glad I have them, thought, for the historical value, if nothing else. Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted July 20, 2009 Report Posted July 20, 2009 (edited) Bill, is that Tipton quartet the one that was a memorial to Billy? just wondering because I recently found a Bill Tipton album from the 1950s - unfortunately, he/she turns out to be a pretty mediocre piano player. Yes, the group was originally called The Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet and has been around for quite awhile. The current (well, at least when this disc was recorded) edition is Amy Denio, Jessica Lurie, Sue Orfield and Tina Richerson on saxophones plus Chris Stromquist on drums. Laws of Motion was released in July 2008. I received the CD from Signal to Noise and just completed a review for the next issue of the mag. just wondering because I recently found a Bill Tipton album from the 1950s - unfortunately, he/she turns out to be a pretty mediocre piano player.
