Chuck Nessa Posted September 4, 2007 Report Posted September 4, 2007 I sold my lps to finance the AE box. I bought a French version of the Monk/Workshop from a member and it duplicates the lps I sold. I now have added the 2001 US/Sony/Columbia reissue which touts the "restored" performances (edits undone) and extra material. One nagging problem is the recording of 'Round Midnight. The lp/French cd version is 9'16" and the "restored" version is 6'07". Any answers before I sell the earlier version? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 12, 2007 Author Report Posted September 12, 2007 Up. Where are all those Monk experts? Quote

If you have both, are you able to listen to both to see if it sounds like they have edited something on the 2001 CD version? Quote

If you have both, are you able to listen to both to see if it sounds like they have edited something on the 2001 CD version? The question was if anyone had the answer. I had no time to check them. Strong personal stuff intervened. The early set is gone now. Still want to know the difference. Quote
paul secor Posted October 17, 2007 Report Posted October 17, 2007 Finally found my LPs of Jazz Workshop - thought I had sold them. Listening to the LP version and the CD version, both Charlie Rouse's solo and Monk's solo have been edited on the CD - at least that's what my ears tell me. Very strange, since the premise of the CD was to present the Blackhawk recordings without edits. Also, the first CD - on which that version of "Midnight" appears - runs about 73 minutes. Wouldn't the extra three minutes that were edited have fit in? Quote
brownie Posted October 17, 2007 Report Posted October 17, 2007 Was away from the Board when this was started. Can only concur with Paul Secor. I still have the European CBS twofer (made in Holland, not France). 'Round Midnight' is listed as clocking in a 9m10s. Glad I kept the vinyl! Quote
paul secor Posted October 17, 2007 Report Posted October 17, 2007 Just checked the timing on the CD - 74'10". Wouldn't three additional minutes have fit in? I've tended to think that folks are too harsh in their opinions about Orin Keepnews. Now I'm not so sure that I don't agree. Quote
Cliff Englewood Posted October 17, 2007 Report Posted October 17, 2007 Keepnews is most definitely a cock head. Quote
RDK Posted October 17, 2007 Report Posted October 17, 2007 So the restored version is 3' shorter? Quote
brownie Posted October 18, 2007 Report Posted October 18, 2007 So the restored version is 3' shorter? Indeed! and it makes Keepnews climb to a much higher position in my BAD list! Quote
