Unk Posted September 19, 2007 Report Posted September 19, 2007 No Definitive or Jazz Factory for me; I'll take the genuine/legit issue. But there are also some Music and Arts CDs too; I guess I'm assuming these are legit. Yes? No? Quote
felser Posted September 19, 2007 Report Posted September 19, 2007 Well, now I'm $109 poorer than I was 30 minutes ago. Quote

I believe European copyright laws are different than those in the USA. I think most of the material is out of copyright, at least in Europe. Someone correct me if I am wrong. There are other odd ball jazz labels at Berkshire. You may do a general search for say Miles Davis and see what hits you get. Some I found: 1201 Music, Prisim etc. Michael Quote
RDK Posted September 19, 2007 Report Posted September 19, 2007 Music & Arts is indeed legit, but they are likely to be cutouts so moralizing on those grounds may not get you very far. Also, many people feel that that Definitive's version of Benny Goodman's 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert is the, uh, definitive version out there (i.e., it sounds the best). Haven't heard it yet myself, but I'll be ordering it now. Quote
mjzee Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 I ordered 4: Count Basie Complete RCA, Lester Young Complete Aladdin and Complete Savoy, and Louis Armstrong Complete RCA. Quote
RDK Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 Anybody know anything about... Charlie Shavers & Coleman Hawkins: A Famous Jazz Party Looks very tempting and AMG at least doesn't seem to list this material as available elsewhere. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 Dubbed from Boris Rose lps of some tv shows. Great music, questionable sound. Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 (edited) Music & Arts is indeed legit, but they are likely to be cutouts so moralizing on those grounds may not get you very far... Over the past year or so I've purchased a number of Music and Arts releases from Berkshire. They are of uniformly high technical quality too if that is an issue. The two Dennis Gonzalez CDs are highly recommended: Dallas-London Sextet & The Earth and the Heart Suite. I also like the Paul Plimley/Lisle Ellis/Donald Robinson Density of the Lovestruck Demons set and the Georg Graewe/ Ernst Reijseger/Gerry Hemingway The View From Points West CD quite a bit. Looks like some more Graewe, a little Joseph Jarman and Marilyn Crispell are next in line for me. Edited September 20, 2007 by Bill Barton Quote
