I'm of conflicting minds about this chap.

Yes, his tunes for these shows had an

unmistakable Hazelhurst stamp - I often found

myself coming across a "new" British sitcom

and could immediately tell that it was a Hazelhurst

score - but, to me, it wasn't necessarily a good thing

because they nearly always seemed steeped in a grand schmaltz

and were often devoid of any depth - leaving me to wonder

why the BBC continued to request music from this guy who

always appeared to be decades behind other TV soundtrack creators.

Maybe he was a lovable eccentric.

A very talented tunesmith. Some of them just lodge in your brain and stay there forever. His music was omnipresent on the box in the 1970s during BBC's light entertainment so called 'golden era' and in many respects defined that era.

OK - that Frank Spencer music was never a masterpiece but to put it together overnight on a budget shoestring with two picolos and using morse code of the title was quite nifty.
