The Magnificent Goldberg Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 Bryant, with Tate & etc, also made an album called "Dancing the big twist" for Columbia, about a year later. Both are good albums. SERIOUSLY underrated, I think. MG Quote
brownie Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 Damn right! Might be a good idea for Mosaic to release a Ray Bryant Select with his Columbia trio and small group sessions... ... unless the wise guys from Spain/Andorra are already working on that! Very enjoyable stuff on those Columbia Bryants! Quote

Very enjoyable stuff on those Columbia Bryants! A Cadet set would be nice too; not much of that stuff out and about on CD. MG PS - I think maybe quite a few of the Columbias are out on Collectables. I have "Madison time"/"Holywood jazz beat" on a Collectables twofer. I think there may be others. Edited October 24, 2007 by The Magnificent Goldberg Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 Following up Brownie's hint, I just had a look at Ray Bryant on Lonehill. There are 3 CDs by the Charlie Shavers/Ray Bryant Quartet - actually, LPs I've never heard of made for MGM & Everest under Shavers' name, but Shavers/Bryant can't be bad, can it? (Well, MGM?) There is one by the Ray Bryant Trio called "Complete recordings", which is "Live at Basin Street East" and "Cold Turkey" - two very nice (but no better, I think - they're not nearly as good as "SOUL") albums that came out on Sue, and which have been reissued on Collectables. And, most interesting, is one called "The complete Little Suzie recordings", which turns out to be an LP called "Ray Bryant plays" + the original hit version of "Little Suzie" parts 2 & 4 (there never was a parts 1 & 3 single - what a wonderful world). All this stufff originally appeared on Bob Thiele's Signature label. I think I'll get that "Little Suzie" CD. Anyone know anything about the Charlie Shavers material? MG Quote

I have "Madison time"/"Holywood jazz beat" on a Collectables twofer. I think there may be others. Right. Dancing The Big Twist is on another Collectables twofer coupled with the Epic album Ray Bryant Trio. In fact all of Bryant's Columbias/Epics have come out on CD, so no real need for a Mosaic set. Swinging Swede Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 A Cadet set would be nice too; not much of that stuff out and about on CD. Actually all of Bryant's Cadets have been out on Japanese CDs, except Take A Bryant Step. (At least I'm not aware of a CD release of that one.) Excellent stuff! In addition, Bryant's first Cadet session remains unissued and there are quite a few unissued tracks from the other sessions, so in this case a Mosaic set would make more sense. But I don't think Cuscuna is a big fan of this type of music, so a Mosaic set may not be very likely. Quote
brownie Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 The Columbia (and Prestige) Ray Bryant leader's sessions always appealed to me more than the Argo/Cadet dates. If Cuscuna is no fan of this type of music, then I'll rely on the Spanish/Andorrans Quote

I agree on the likelihood of a Mosiac set of this, though I'd buy it like a shot; the only one of the Cadets I have is "Gotta travel on". I used to have an original of "Slow freight", but sold it when I was on the dole in '69. MG Quote
