Hi Gang,

Seeing as how I am about to have heart procedure or procedures upon me and as a result will probably have to take Plavix the rest of my life, my question to you is this.

Has anyone heard of or utilized or presently using Discount Drugs from Canada as their medication dispensary?? This, after some research, seems to be the one place of avoiding the horrendous costs of medication in the United States. Plavix has apparently been out for about 10 years and yet there is no generic medication available, at least not on my medical plan.

Any verification or confirmation is greatly appreciated. You do not have to identify yourself, this is for my own information to make a solid choice of obtaining needed medications.

Thanks

Bruce

Hey Bruce, your thread looks like spam! Probably would have been better served by a different title.

Sorry to hear about your health difficulties. Wish I had information for you, but I know nothing. I hope the best for you.

Sorry I can't be of any help, Bruce, but I just wanted to send you best wishes for a speedy recovery and a long and healthy life.

Seconded.

I've heard alot of people on fixed incomes in this part of the country go down to Mexico to purchase their Rx medications. I don't know if that's an alternative to Canada for you or not, but might be worth considering.

Interesting. I recently changed jobs, so I'm going through that "90 day no insurance" period, and I wish I'd thought of looking into that myself, Bruce. I take three different meds on a daily basis, so I'll be it would have been worth the effort. If you decide to go this route, I hope you'll share your experiences with this!

Sorry you've got to have any such experience, though. Hope it goes well!

Can't help you with the meds.

Fwiw: I've heard some mighty fine things about medical procedures performed in Malaysia(or that part of the world), at much more reasonable rates than here in the US.

Knock on wood I've only had use for this on occasion when under a plan a few years ago. I was hesitant at first but just could not swing the proice of the meds stateside.

Went with "CanadaPharmacy" as I recall and had no problems at all. Simply faxed over the script or might have had the office do it for me. Arrived safely, no worries.

I believe some heart meds need to be strictly moinitored up front to get to the proper balance required for your specific problem so I'd wait it out till I knew excatly what is needed.

Good luck with the upcoming.

Thanks guys for all your concerns and information.

Yes, I am concerned about the legality and legitimacy of these outfits. Am checking into Canada Pharmacy. No, I won't be ordering any meds until after my procedure and doctor's recommendations.

No, I hope I don't do anything stupid. Yes, I really need some kind of discount situation, the FDA appears to really have a monopoly on this Plavix situation, millions of heart patients, apparently no meds competition yet, and setting prices that break a lot of people.

What I am trying to investigate now is if Plavix has really been on the market 10 years, and after 7 years, any pharmaceutical can produce the same drug and yet, there does not appear to be any competition in the United States.

Thanks again,

Bruce

p.s will try to be more active in the NBA and NFL discussions this year. And I still like the Pistons with one caveat, it will be hard to win a title with Flip Saunders at the helm.

Hi Guys,

I have completed the operations. Actually it turned out to be two operations; one on Friday and one on Monday, at total of six (6) stents were implanted in my heart arteries. At first it was to be an overnight thbing, but it wasn't. It got more complicated after they (the doctors) got inside (angiogram).

I am well, tired and appalled about Plavix having such high powered lawyers that they can declare a generic drug for Plavix illegal. Plavix is expensive as hell BUT I am alive. Thanks for your support guys.

Bruce, sorry to hear about your heart troubles! I looked into getting drugs from Canada(Legal ones! ;) ) a Gall bladder pill called Atigall(Sp?) It was very expensive, something like $170!!!

Turned out it was a bit more of a pain than I thought it was going to be to get it from Canada, then it turned out with shipping, it wasn't even $20 bucks less than the price at Wal-Mart!

I will look later for more info from consumer advocate Clark Howard,(Besides the link below) he was on a local TV station talking about this issue just a few weeks ago. He mentioned something interesting about how much of a difference there is in prices between even places such as Sams Club and Wal-mart. He also mentioned that in Georgia at least, you could get prescriptions at Sams club without being a member!

Don't know why I can't find the story on the TV stations website...I'll keep looking though. Doing a google search, I did find this article from earlier in the year, that explains many an interesting fact about generic pricing....

How to get the best deal on prescriptions

Thursday, March 22, 2007

The Wall Street Journal has done a research project on prescription drugs, showing the disparity in the industry. The price difference — even between generics — is huge.

The last survey found Costco Wholesale to be the cheapest. This time, it was Sam's Club with Costco coming in No. 2.

For example, Zocor is $90 at Walgreens, $80 at CVS, $12 at Costco and $6 at Sam's Club. The generic of Zoloft was $74 at Walgreens, $70 at CVS, $6 at Costco at and Sam's Club it was $5.

What's happening? Instead of pricing generics up from the wholesale cost, places like Walgreen's and CVS discount from the cost of brand name drugs. So a generic may cost them $3 at wholesale, but they charge $70 or $80 because it's still less than a brand name.

That's why CVS and Walgreens push generic drugs so hard. They make a ton on generics because they mark them up so much.

So it's clear that filling your prescriptions at Costco and Sam's Club is the way to go. If you're worried about being a member, don't. In many states, you don't need a membership to get prescriptions from those warehouse clubs.

Thanks Loads Berigan,

I will check to see how Plavix fits into their picture. So far, with the use of my medical, I have gotten the cost down to $60 for a 30 day supply (but that is still tooo high). When I get my next prescription I will send that to my medical Home Delivery and save an additional $60 (pay for two months, get third month free). I really appreciate the information. And I hope all the guys are watching this thread because one never knows when it will affect them.
