Bluerein Posted December 22, 2007 Report Posted December 22, 2007 Hello all, I suppose some of you also got a message from my computer about a "vote" for a film. Of course I didn't send it. Is there good anti virus software for the Apple Mac? I've never ever needed it but appearently the Mac is no longer safe for these things. Thanks in advance. Quote
porcy62 Posted December 22, 2007 Report Posted December 22, 2007 Yes, I would like to know it too. Quote
Stefan Wood Posted December 22, 2007 Report Posted December 22, 2007 Buy the Virex software for Mac. It works, and doesn't interfere with the computer unlike a certain Norton program. Quote

Bluerein Posted December 22, 2007 Author Report Posted December 22, 2007 Well I didn't know it could happen to the Mac as well but it did hit me last night so I suppose there are MacVirusMakers in the world (how naive of us not to thing there are any). Quote
Christiern Posted December 22, 2007 Report Posted December 22, 2007 I strongly advise staying away from Norton products, they are destructive (at least the Mac versions). I do recommend Virex. It may not be needed but, just in case. Quote

Quincy Posted December 22, 2007 Report Posted December 22, 2007 I've been searching around on the various Mac sites and have yet to come across any mention of an OS X virus, malware or Trojan that acts this way. Unless the title of the movie is too disgusting to mention, would you mind sharing the name (or at least part of it)? I only ask as I'm trying to find out information about it, it's not that I'm doubting you. (For instance, years ago there was a "Simpsons" virus that affected OS 9.) Quote
Christiern Posted December 22, 2007 Report Posted December 22, 2007 It sounds more like a naughty spam than a virus. Quote
Bluerein Posted December 22, 2007 Author Report Posted December 22, 2007 Since it's sent from my hotmail account I believe it's not a problem which originates from my computer at all. My contacts are on a server "protected" by hotmail and not on my computer. Am I right to think this happened beyond my Mac? Quote
mjzee Posted December 23, 2007 Report Posted December 23, 2007 Without having the details, it's possible that the problem doesn't come from you at all. Someone whom you once sent an email to might have had their computer compromised, and the spammer/virus writer put your email address as the "from:". When I've asked about anti-virus software at the Apple stores, they've actively discouraged me from buying any. Quote

There's no news on any of the Mac or security related sites about this sort of thing happening due to the Mac. Whew! Sorry you had to go through this though, as it's no fun. Quote
Bluerein Posted December 23, 2007 Author Report Posted December 23, 2007 Thanks for all the replies! Good to know we're still on the safe side of the computer spectrum. Quote
