danasgoodstuff Posted February 16, 2008 Report Posted February 16, 2008 The wife and I saw ornette here in puddle town last night. It was exquisite; don't think I ve ever heard Ornette play so lyrically. current band is O., denardo, 1 acoustic bass, two electric bass. Once they got the sound sorted out you could hear each distinctly and this lineup allowed them to go in a lot of different directions... Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted February 17, 2008 Report Posted February 17, 2008 ideally i know i should of been more stoked about this and took off from work and gone to this, but i had to work and i really didnt give much thought to going Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted February 21, 2008 Author Report Posted February 21, 2008 (edited) yes, you should've gone, Ornette was as lyrical as i've ever heard him. Who knew that what that band needed was yet another bass player... Any thoughts from those who have seen Orenette recently? Edited February 21, 2008 by danasgoodstuff Quote
B. Clugston Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 I saw Ornette play in Vancouver on Sunday. Great show. Interesting band with the two electric bassists and one acoustic. Tony Falanga cleary harkens back to the David Izenson days with his arco playing, while Al MacDowell, who was mostly playing high notes, brought a Prime Time feel to the group. Charnett Moffett was the real wild card: Prime Time always struck me as too cerebral in its funkiness, but Moffett brought a downhome funkiness to the concert, something that Denardo picked up on. Due to Moffett's electric presence, the band sounded a lot different that the live boots I've heard from the past two years. Not to say it was a funkfest--Falanga played a major role, particularly on the dirges where he would often state the theme. Ornette himself sounded no different than he did 40 years ago, but he seemed a little lost mid-concert and didn't play much in a couple of pieces and sounded like he was playing a different composition in others. Falanga was helping him sorting out sheet music at times. He was quickly back in form however and sounded like John Zorn during Turnaround, puncuating the head (played by Falanga) with wild squawks.
