six string Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 (edited) I bought some of these when they were released, but they came so swiftly that I stopped buying them to keep my collection in better balance. I just went out to the Concord site and didn't see any in stock. I guess they are out of print? It was a great series imo and I wish I had bought more of them. The only down side was a few often repeated tunes in the sets which eventually created a rule of leaving them out by request by Concord. A few of my favorites are Hank Jones, Jaki Byard, Walter Norris, John Hicks and Jessica Williams. I was able to attend the Jaki Byard recording and a friend of mine tried to invite Jaki to dinner with us after the session but he already had an invitation (probably including Carl Jefferson and other industry people). Hank Jones was the first one I got wind of but the session was sold out before I could sign up. It's a beautiful space. It felt like being in church, jazz church. I really wish I could have been there for Hank's performance, but at least I have the recording. Does anyone else have any favorites or memories if they saw any of the performances? It was a gas watching Jaki Byard play. My recollection is that he played Round Midnight with one hand ('cause he can). He was unhappy with a couple of tunes so we got to hear him play a few of them twice. Are there any sick individuals who own the whole series? Edited March 7, 2008 by six string Quote
John Tapscott Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 Are there any sick individuals who own the whole series? I am one of the sick individuals who owns them all. I didn't really plan to acquire the whole series, but one day I discovered I had 20 or 25 of them, so made it a goal to get them all, a goal I accomplished about 10 years ago. It's not really a big deal. For the most part they were readily available back then, and there's only 42 volumes, so it's not like I'm one of those really sick individuals who owns ALL the Mosaic sets. I think the Kenny Barron is my favourite; others that rank highly for me are Adam Makowicz, John Hicks, Hank Jones, Andy LaVerne, Roger Kellaway, John Colianni, Monty Alexander, Kenny Drew Jr., to name a few. Biggest disappointment of the series is that Tommy Flanagan wasn't included. Quote
Claude Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 I downloaded all the Maybeck albums available from eMusic in 2002 when they still had the flatrate price, so that doesn't qualify me as a sicko The CDs are OOP, but many are still available as downloads from EMusic http://www.emusic.com/search.html?mode=x&QT=maybeck Quote
six string Posted March 7, 2008 Author Report Posted March 7, 2008 Only 42? I forgot about the Kenny Barron disc. I've got that one too and I do like it a lot. I hadn't noticed until you mentioned it, but damn, how did they leave Tommy Flannagan out of the series? Quote
jazzbo Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 I'm one of the sickoes. Favorites of mine include the Akiyoshi, Sutton, Hicks and McKenna Quote
