Decided Oliver Nelson wasn't really for me - love 'Stolen Moments' but most of the rest had too much of that brassy, post-40s big band sound for my taste.

However, I really enjoyed the Basie track towards the end - 'Afrique'. Didn't sound like Basie at all!

That album (for Flying Dutchman) is the strangest thing Basie ever recorded (along with the James Bond album for United Artists). 'Afrique' even includes some Albert Ayler tunes !

WKCR FM is my favorite, with a gulf between it and any pretender IMO. But today I broke down and pledged $50, a lot for a broke-ass like myself, to WBGO, Newark. B/c Rhonda Hamilton knows her stuff. The morning guy, Gary Walker, ain't bad either. And just because. Maybe it's that Phill schaap isn't on BGO. I mean we have to accept our small victories.

WKCR is a great favorite, particularly for those marathons dedicated to a single artist.

Jazz Record Requests from BBC Radio 3

Now playing: Woody Herman, "Opus de Funk" from Woody's Winners

That Kathy Stobart track with Lyttelton's band was a gas!

I see the BBC old guard have been at work again, banishing Jazz Library with Priestley on Mulligan to everybody's favourite hour of midnight to 1 a.m! If this goes on I might just as well listen to live evening radio from the U.S!

I suspect that's the plan.

'Well, we put jazz on but no-one listens. So we have to pull it.'

Nice JRR again. Simple concept but always has at least one surprise. I really liked the Benny Carter 'My One and Only Love'.

I'm in the enthusing chair on this Saturday's Jazz Library. We're doing Barney Wilen - it's a very varied and very lovely bunch of stuff.

I will be certain to listen! :tup

Thanks Bill. Shame about the truncated audio clips on the podcast. But even then that version of I Loves You Porgy is an absolute killer, isn't it.

Yes, I noticed those. I take it the programme was prerecorded at a civilised hour, unlike the time the Beeb expects jazzers without computers to be up at! :)

An old Zenith.

I used to listen to this one (not in the 1930's- I wasn't born yet. I had one in the 80's and 90's):

But if I could listen to any radio (especially if I could go back to 1935 and pick one up cheaper), it would be this one...

(for those who don't know what was under there, I'll let the drama build just a bit...)

Jim, you've let too much time lapse... I'm gonna put in a spoiler (but not a photo, you can still do that): isn't it the most famous of the Teague-designed Sparton sets? The Model 1168 Nocturne?
