RogerF Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 I see that 'Helen Twelvetrees' has been reissued in the latest tranche of MPS reissues. I am not familiar with this one but it's at the top of my must purchase list as it features alongside Mariano, Jack Bruce, John Marshall, Jan Hammer et al. Sounds, on paper at least, like an absolute corker. Anyone heard this album? Quote
7/4 Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 Man, I've never heard of this one: Charlie Mariano: soprano saxophone (5-7), alto saxophone (1, 4), flute (3), nagaswaram (2); Zbigniew Seifert: violin; Jan Hammer: acoustic and electric piano, Moog synthesizer; Jack Bruce: bass; John Marshall: drums; Nippy Noya: percussion. 2008 Re-release on cd for the first time. Originally issued in 1976. A standout electric jazz/rock album, "Helen 12 Trees" have been issued for the first time on CD . The lineup features Mahavishnu Orchestra/Jeff Beck Keyboardist Jan Hammer, the brillaint Jack Bruce on bass, Soft Machine Drummer John Marshall on drums along with Polish violinist Zbigniew Seifert. The compostions are energetic and complex and Marianos encompasses boisterous jazz rock to majestic Indian tradition. [The CD reissue by SPV is a 24-bit remaster done in Japan from the source tapes. It is beautifully packaged in a gatefold facsimile cover of the LP, with full liner notes in English and German, and the black CD is encased in a lined sleeve. The entire package is house in a heavy-paper outer sleeve (that also contains original art work) to protect it. It not only sounds wonderful, but it also looks great. The best thing besides the music is that its cost is totally manageable for ardent CD buyers.] Quote
felser Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 it's ok. i don't like the space given to rhythmless duets (one is sax/violin and one is sax/piano). there were better albums to reissue first.... Cuz as DM always says, the only thing worse than a bad drummer is no drummer at all ! :-) Quote
7/4 Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 My interest here is Jan Hammer, of all people. I really like his pre-Miami Vice Moog and all these obscure albums keep popping up. And Jack Bruce too. Quote
7/4 Posted April 13, 2008 Report Posted April 13, 2008 Mahavishnu was a huge influence on my teen listening habits. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 13, 2008 Report Posted April 13, 2008 Mahavishnu was a huge influence on my teen listening habits. Fats Domino, Little Richard, the Five Satins and Elvis had that effect on me. I survived. Quote
