Rooster_Ties Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 (edited) Holy crap, I just saw that Sam Rivers is playing at the Coleman Hawkins Legacy Jazz Festival this year. I am SO THERE. Here's the complete line-up for the whole fest: http://www.hawkinsjazzfest.org/schedule.html I know most of the guys in the two bands immediately preceding Sam on the schedule (all from Kansas City), and they're all VERY well worth hearing. Anybody else from KC going / want to go?? Car-pool?? (I'll be glad to drive -- '06 Prius.) SAM RIVERS!!! Edited April 7, 2008 by Rooster_Ties Quote
Spontooneous Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 I'm fascinated by the programming logic of putting Sam onstage at 5 p.m. and following him with two local acts. Quote
bertrand Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 It makes sense when you know that Sam's bedtime is 7:30 SHARP. Quote
Spontooneous Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 It makes sense when you know that Sam's bedtime is 7:30 SHARP. So that's why he doesn't tour much. That and the contract rider requiring milk, cookies and a bedtime story. Quote
DTMX Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 Sam still had it going on when I saw him about 4 years ago. He drove from Orlando to Atlanta just to do one show with Jason Moran, then drove back. Of course he was doing 30 mph in the far left lane with his blinker on the whole way, but still, that's quite a haul. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted April 10, 2008 Author Report Posted April 10, 2008 I'm fascinated by the programming logic of putting Sam onstage at 5 p.m. and following him with two local acts. Maybe they stuck the crazy 'free-jazz'-leaning guy on during the dinner hour, so all the "regular" jazz fans can slip out and grab a bite, and not miss a beat. I started typing his half in jest, but the more I think of it -- that may well be their actual thinking. Quote

Hot Ptah Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 I wondered if Sam agreed to appear in Topeka at a reduced fee because it fell on an open date between two gigs, in cities for which Topeka would be a decent stopping point in between. Then to accomodate his travel needs, they put him on early so that he could get to the next city comfortably. Just a theory, but apparently not correct if Spontooneous' last post is any indication. davidmanson Posted April 13, 2008 Report Posted April 13, 2008 We just had Sam Rivers Quartet on the EMIT series on March 28 and he sounded great. We sold out the small concert venue (178 seats) and opened the lobby doors so those who could not get a seat inside, could hear him for free. The audience gave the group a standing ovation. Besides the incredible music he makes and his amazing history in jazz, Sam is one of the nicest guys in the music business. Quote
