Kreilly
Is there any way to locate a comprehensive tracklisting, recording dates, and personnel of this box? Thanks

Kreilly
Here it is: http://cgi.ebay.com/10-CD-Box-BEST-OF-*THE...807261181r19755 Very little playing time per disc! The ebay description is misleading. I believe these are all early public domain recordings, it is not a "Best of" collection. I would like to know the session info for the discs in this set. Ken Dryden
Why would anyone buy this counterfeit piece of crap? Yeah, European copyright laws allow this nonsense, but this material is available in more complete form from legitimate U.S. labels.

I agree, I wouldn't have bought it--it was a gift from someone who didn't know better and saw the cheaper price for the amount of music. In addition to the gift, I have the monk complete blue note, complete riverside, complete columbia solo, complete vogue/black lion. It would still be nice to know what the personell, sessions this one is from, though.
Chuck Nessa
In addition to the Monk led sides on BN and Prestige, I quickly spotted the Hawkins quartet from '44, the Verve Bird & Diz session, the Prestige Rollins quartet with Monk and Miles Prestige date with Bags and Monk. Thanks Chuck. I already own nearly all of it. For $15 it was tough to pass up. The packaging is poor, there are no liner notes and it could have fit on 5 discs. jimac51
Check out your local FYE(Trans World) stores. There is a 7.99 bargain bin in most stores, usually located in the back.As of this writing, they are taking 50% off at the register. I got this set for four bucks. There was a Sinatra box from the same source carried by FYE a couple of years back-10 discs, which I scooped up at 20 bucks, only to see it later for 15. TenorSax
http://www.trezise.ca/thelonious-monk---wallet-box-10-cd-by-track http://www.trezise.ca/thelonious-monk---wallet-box-10-cd-by-artist I created these lists after matching up the tracks with the recording sessions listed on the Monk Discography A review on amazon by Mike Tarrani gives this more general info: CD1 contains some tracks from Coleman Hawkins - Bean And The Boys (Prestige PR 7824) recorded in October 19, 1944. CD2 contains some tracks from Thelonious Monk - Genius Of Modern Music, Vol. 1 (Blue Note BLP 1510) recorded in October 1947. CD3, CD4 and and CD5 contain some tracks from The Complete Blue Note Recordings Of Thelonious Monk (Mosaic MR4-101) recorded between 1947 and 1952. CD6 and CD7 contain some tracks from Thelonious Monk - Monk (Prestige PRLP 7053) recorded in November 1953 and May 1954. CD8 contains some tracks from Thelonious Monk And Sonny Rollins (Prestige PRLP 7075) recorded between November 1953 and October 1954. CD9 contains tracks from two albums: Miles Davis - Bags' Groove (Prestige PRLP 7109) and Miles Davis And The Modern Jazz Giants (Prestige PRLP 7150), both of which were recorded during the same session on December 24, 1954. CD10 seems to have individual tracks taken from a number of recordings, making it nearly impossible to cite a single source for the majority of tracks. jazztrain
These four tracks on CD1 were originally issued on 78 on Sonora: Recollections (W. Thomas) 2:41 Flyin’ Hawk (W. Thomas) 2:49 Drifting On A Reed (W. Thomas) 3:04 On The Bean (W. Thomas) 2:53 There was no Prestige then.

I thought it was the Joe Davis label (78's 8250 & 8251)
jazztrain
You're right. Those tracks were on Joe Davis. The 1946 session that was on the Prestige LP (and on which Hank Jones was the pianist) was on Sonora. Sorry for the confusion!
