Personnel (besides Horn, of whom I am no particular fan) looks quite promising:

Egberto Gismonti - Guitar (Acoustic), Flute, Guitar, Bambuzal, Piano

Dom Um Romão - Percussion

Dom Salvador - Piano (Electric)

Roberto Silva - Percussion, Drums

Ron Carter - Bass

So, do they lift Horn up to their level or do they come down to his?

As always, thanks in advance!

Have you heard any of Gismonti's records of that time with his band "Academia de Danca"? The ones on his own label, Carmo, not the rather tamed one on ECM? The one with Horn is more like these, very lively, modern Brazilian stuff, no bossa, Airto's "Identity" (on which Gismonti also played) is close, too.

I don't know what someone slipped in his Kool Aid, but at one point, Mr. Horn was a pretty fair post-bop tenor player. I've been very happy periodically checking in with his album Something Blue ever since I downloaded it from eMusic a year or so ago. When I was into my heavy hippie phase in the late '60's and early '70's, his Taj Mahal album was required listening.

Up over and out.

Funny that you would single out his tenor playing , since he rarely played the instrument . Most of his recordings feature his excellent flute and alto playing , along with an occasional turn on clarinet . Something Blue is a personal favorite of mine , not least for the hard swing generated by vibist Emil Richards and by unsung pianist Paul Moer . I have almost all of Horn's pre-RCA recordings and would suggest that anyone interested in Horn-the-jazz-musician check out his three Columbia albums . Two of them are out on a Collectables 2-on-1 CD , but the final one , Impressions of Cleopatra , has yet to be reissued , but it's a real sleeper that flute fans will want to track down .

Impressions of Cleopatra is a very good record. The best Paul Horn record I've heard.

BTW Paul Horn is still alive and well somewhere in California. A friend of mine working on a Cal Tjader bio made friends with him and passed on to him CDRs of a few rare Tjader LPs that never made it to CD. And we made him a copy of the Chico Hamilton Mosaic, as he never got one ...
