Rooster_Ties Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 (edited) (everything here is cut-n-paste from the AMG, for better or for worse) Tones for Joan's Bones (all versions that I can find on-line, both LP and CD) seems to have these 4 tracks... 1 Litha Corea 13:36 2 This Is New Gershwin, Weill 7:41 3 Tones for Joan's Bones Corea 6:11 4 Straight up and Down Corea 12:34 While the the seemingly original issue of Inner Space includes these 6 (with 2 tracks overlapping the above Tones for Joan's Bones)... 1 Straight up and Down Corea 12:34 2 Litha Corea 13:31 3 Inner Space Corea 9:20 4 Windows Corea 8:47 5 Guijira Corea 12:20 6 Trio for Flute, Bassoon and Piano Corea 5:07 and there's a more recent "Collectables" CD version of Inner Space with the following tracks (seemingly everything)... 1 Straight Up and Down Corea 12:32 2 This Is New Gershwin, Weill 7:38 3 Tones for Joan's Bones Corea 6:05 4 Litha Corea 13:29 5 Inner Space Corea 9:20 6 Windows Corea 8:45 7 Guijira Corea 12:18 8 Trio for Flute, Bassoon and Piano Corea 5:07 So, it sure looks like the 8 track "Collectables" version is the way to go, correct?? Is that the best and most complete way to pick up this material?? Or is there anything ELSE out there, related to these sessions, that isn't included on the 8 track CD?? (Thanks in advance.) Chuck Nessa Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 The lp version of Inner Space was a 2 disc set and the Collectables disc duplicates it as I remember it. The premise of Inner Space was to reissue Tones + 2 unissued titles + 2 tracks issued under Hubert Laws' name. If you really want to be complete, hunt down the 2 Laws Atlantics. Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...st&p=535304 The Collectables version had not been issued at the time. Quote
Chas Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 I doubt that Collectables disc sounds as good as East West Japan's HDCD Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted August 19, 2008 Author Report Posted August 19, 2008 Just ordered the Collectables version (8 tracks) from Dusty -- as long as I was getting some other stuff there. Yeah, the sound won't be nearly as good as the Japanese issue -- but I'm sure it'll be half the cost that way. Quote

And come to think of it, I think a friend of mine has the Japanese issue of this -- so I would harbor no guilt about burning a copy, and putting my new (paid for @ $13 new, and fully legit) Collectables copy of "Inner Space" in a slimline 2CD case, with the burn of the Japanese version in the front position. Chuck Nessa Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 Wouldn't be too surprised to discover they are the same mastering. Quote
Daniel A Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 (edited) It's unfortunate that the two extra tracks were not included on the CD reissue of "Tones". The two tracks from Hubert Laws' "Law's Cause" are probably the best ones from that album anyway, so my advice is that you only look for the LP if you're a diehard Hubert Laws fan. Collectables reissued it together with a completely unrelated album by Eddie Higgins (probably his weakest) and the sound quality of that reissue was among the worst I've encountered (se older thread here). Look for vinyl only if interested. Edited August 19, 2008 by Daniel A Quote
Shrdlu Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 I first heard this in the U.S. CD version, with the two tracks missing. The sound was so bad that I could not really enjoy the music. Then, I got a copy of the Japanese CD version, which is the same as the original double LP. It sounds great and the music really came alive when I heard that. But Atlantic's engineering is not very good, and it's sad that Rudy or Columbia didn't do the album. The title track is a classic composition, and you will also enjoy the version that Blue Mitchell recorded. Chick was present on that too. Quote
Shrdlu Posted August 23, 2008 Report Posted August 23, 2008 By "title track", I mean "Tones For Joan's Bones". I say this because the 1988 U.S. CD mis-issue () is titled "Inner Space". (It has an excuse printed on the papers twice. I hate it when they do something wrong like that and make it clear that they know it's wrong by adding an excuse.) It was nice to hear that track again. It's a trio cut, very much in the Bill Evans tradition. Quote
