DukeCity Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 I'll confess: Jerry Lewis is one of my guilty pleasures. Especially the older stuff. With Dean Martin (both the TV show and their movies), and in his earlier '60s movies. Yeah, the movies get tedious, so I usually just fast forward to my favorite bits, which are often the musical numbers. The later the movies, the less likely I am to bother wading through the bathwater to find the baby. And years ago, I was even a fan of the Telethon. Both to check out some JL and to see some of the "stars". That being said, I watched just a few minutes this year, and couldn't do it any more. Hard for JL to work up the energy for the "madcap" hijinks. In the little bit that I saw they were playing some of his schtick from the '82 telethon. Sad to think that those are now the "good ol' days". Some of my favorite film bits: Doing the pantomime to Basie's "Cute" in Cinderfella. The Basie band with Joe Williams, also in Cinderfella. The pantomime to "Blues in Hoss Flat" in The Errand Boy (I think). And from some earlier '50s films, Maynard Ferguson was a staff musician at Paramount and there are a few Martin/Lewis movies where there are musical numbers where they turn MF loose, screamin' his ass off in his prime. A perfect over-the-top musical complement to Lewis' over-the-top schtick. YMMV (unless, of course, you're French) Quote
JSngry Posted September 1, 2008 Author Report Posted September 1, 2008 Buddy Rich & band used to do the Telethon. Quote
Dave James Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 Jerry Lewis should hit his knees each and every day to thank the good Lord for Dean Martin. To say he is an acquired taste is putting it mildly. His films remind me of those 5 minute SNL skits that they somehow manage to turn into into full length movies. I know the French consider him a genius (yet another reason to distrust the French) but, as Gertrude Stein said about Oakland, California, "...there's no there there." Up over and out. Quote
JSngry Posted September 2, 2008 Author Report Posted September 2, 2008 This thread is really intended to lament the fact that the telethon got totally overshadowed by other events this year. Why lament? Hell if I know, it gets sadder every year. But still, it's....something. Quote

JSngry Posted September 2, 2008 Author Report Posted September 2, 2008 Did they not have it at all? Quote
catesta Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 I'm in Phoenix right now and the station I remembered it being on didn't have it listed. So, I thought maybe Jerry wasn't doing it this year. But, now as I look this morning it was aired in a different station. My bad. Quote
BERIGAN Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 I flipped by at one point yesterday, and saw 46 Million had already been raised...middle of the day. Don't know what it ended up at. Americans are quite generous when you get right down to it.... Quote
BruceH Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 I didn't know that they still did the telethon. Who the hell aires it? Don't think it was on any of the stations I get. (Jerry Lewis. The Jim Carrey of his day.) Quote
Dan Gould Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 I noticed that WGN bailed on it for the Cub game, then went back to it ... Quote

Christiern Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 I have always found Jerry Lewis to be exceedingly unfunny, annoyingly so. But, then again, I'm not French. Quote
Son-of-a-Weizen Posted March 12, 2011 Report Posted March 12, 2011 Some of my favorite film bits: Doing the pantomime to Basie's "Cute" in Cinderfella. The Basie band with Joe Williams, also in Cinderfella. Saw this one tonite with my kids. Fun flick....nice & easy. Enjoyed the Basie segments ( ) ...the one with Lewis playin' along in the kitchen to 'Cute' is pretty good Quote
