Especially for Jim A. & other organists, Barry Kiener (I believe)

DEEP!

I got to meet Barry, the first time was when I was attending a Stan Kenton jazz camp (as a high school student) in the mid 70s. Lin Biviano had a big band on tour and booked a night at the music camp (probably a one-off in the midst of a longer tour) and my memory of it was that it was a smoking band! Barry had an amazing knowledge of recordings, he knew personnel and BN catalog numbers off the top of his head. I remember being intimidated by his knowledge and general intensity (I was like, 16 years old!) and had not had much exposure to players at that point.

My impression of him was very positive, and although I didn't know him well I felt very sad when later I heard of his passing. As I later became a "road dog" I came to better understand the trials, tribulations and temptations of those who experienced that bizarre lifestyle. I just remember how cool it was to meet a real "jazz cat"!

Barry was a really fine jazz pianist, and I had the opportunity to record him solo at Cafe des Copains in Toronto...

Apparently there weren't too many digital recordings of his solo playing, and his family asked for a copy after he died. I don't know if their intention was to release it, but he was a fine player, who did himself wrong.

I have a cassette copy that I pop in the player every now and then...

Pat LaBarbara is still a bad boy!

I got a couple of chances to hear and hang with him this year after a too long time.

Pat, and fellow tenorman Kirk MacDonald will be doing their annual tribute to John Coltrane at The Rex Hotel in Toronto next week, Thursday the 25th through Saturday the 27th of September. (Just after what would be Trane's 82nd b'day, on the 23rd.)

I don't know of any tenor man other than Pat who worked regularly with two of jazz' greatest drummers, Buddy Rich and Elvin Jones....

I have that one too, Ted.

Barry made another duo recording with basist Frank Pulara called "Live at the Strath" that is very good also.

Here's Barry:

I wonder, how did you get it? Is it an air check from Toronto?, in which case it's 55 minutes or so, max...because I never made a copy for anyone but the Kiener family, and there's about 90 minutes that I taped...

Thanks Paul.

Barry had one of the greatest LP collections and he was obsessive about collecting Blue Notes.

In those days there were no Japanese reissues.

Here's the Buddy Rich Trio with Barry Kiener and Tom Warrington:

Our Love is Here To Stay

Thanks for the video. Happy-intense music.

BTW, I just ran across a Rich video of "Joy Spring" from '83, about the time (I believe) that the famous tape of Buddy tearing into band members on the bus was made. Hearing this edition of the band, I can understand why Buddy was angry. There is a big drop off in quality and in understanding of how to play the music from his bands of the '70s.

I agree Larry.

Here's a guy who had very high standards in his own playing, who played with all the greats of his era, so he had every right to go off about the quality of the music he was getting from some of those later bands.

The band from the mid 70's was really great.

in 1967 I attended the NY State Music Camp in Delhi, New York and there was a chubby kid there who was a little bit obnoxious but who could play the hell out of a piano - it was Kiener, of course - never saw him again but followed his professional exploits over the years -
