Teasing the Korean Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 I've read conflicting reports of Gil Evans's involvement with this album. Are those his arrangements, or are they the arrangements of the two featured composers? Quote
JSngry Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 Definitely not his arrangements (or compositions). Those belong to Cecil Taylor & Johnny Carisi in their entirety. I've heard Gil's involvement described as "sponsorship", that he lent his name to the album as a showcase to the other men. I believe he showed up to the Carisi session to lend "moral support", not sure about the Taylor. As to the whats and whys of how come there was this as Gil's 2nd Impulse album instead of one featuring his band/music, there's got to be more to it than just altruism, I'd think, but I don't know any specifics. Rooster_Ties Posted November 16, 2008 Report Posted November 16, 2008 Can anybody think of any other similar "sponsorship" type albums?? -- where the name on the spine had next to nothing (or less) to do with the actual date?? (And not just "such-n-so presents" type billings -- but rather NOTHING on the jacket that gives any hint that the contents has/had almost no involvement by the name on the spine.) Sorry if this is a threadjack -- but I think my question is closely related to the purpose of this thread, and doesn't seem to merit an entirely separate one (IMHO). Quote
