Jazzfan18 Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 Did anyone happen to catch the Grammy's last Sunday night? Any particular performances that you liked or disliked? Do you think that everyone who won deserved to win? Personally, I was pretty shocked that Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band did not receive recognition for their hard work. Not to discredit the other jazz bands and singers that received recognition but Big Phat Band has been committed to the jazz industry and is generally more recognizable than those who actually won. Awards handed out for "Best Instrumental Arrangement", "Best Instrumental Composition", and "Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album" have been given in the past to jazz musicians and recognizable ones with more than a couple hundred albums sold. I continue to enjoy Big Phat Band's music and hope that listeners will join with me in looking to support and bring this injustice to the eyes of followers and supporters of jazz music. Quote
Aggie87 Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 (edited) I suspect you're probably the same person who started the thread that was promoting Goodwin for the Grammy (here). Anyway, board member Michael Weiss won in one of the categories you are whining about. Are you suggesting that none of the other nominees (other than Goodwin) are "committed to the jazz industry" and are unrecognizable? Edited February 17, 2009 by Aggie87 Quote

More recognizable than the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra? Quote
Free For All Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 (edited) The Village Vanguard band winning a Grammy is anything but an injustice. The best nominee won IMO, and I'm very happy for them. I'm sorry you are disappointed, but I don't think you'll find many here who share your view. Cheers! By the way: "jazz industry"? kh1958 Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 Yet another example of the jazz industry's innate bias against the overweight. Quote

Are you suggesting that none of the other nominees (other than Goodwin) are "committed to the jazz industry" and are unrecognizable? Big Phat Band is one of my favorite bands! I was surprised that they didn't win anything so of course I wanted to get feed back from other people who appreciate jazz like do! I am not WHINING about Micheal Weiss winning I am wondering what everyone else thought... Clearly there is a difference. Quote
