riverrat Posted May 15, 2009 Report Posted May 15, 2009 I posed this question elsewhere, buried in the thread w/o response so trying again here... Is this series based on new remasters, or older remasters that are simply being reissued with different catalog numbers? I think the latter is more likely. Can anyone provide details? e.g.: TOCJ 8501 Coltrane,John(ts)/Blue Train 1100 TOCJ 8502 Adderley,Cannonball(as)/Somethin' Else 1100 TOCJ 8503 Clark,Sonny(p)/Cool Struttin' 1100 TOCJ 8504 Blakey,Art(ds)/And The Jazz Messengers(Moanin') 1100 etc etc Quote

I suspect the former. I seriously doubt they will be new remasters - the main selling point seems to be the newly reduced budget prices - enough is surely enough, even for BN Japan ! They add that more information will be forthcoming. If you would like to post links for any forthcoming additional release information, I'll happily read it and report. riverrat Posted May 15, 2009 Author Report Posted May 15, 2009 (edited) Thank you kinuta. I was curious if the Works TOCJ series would be reissued yet again, given its enduring popularity. That would make sense. The lower prices are nice. Shrdlu Posted May 16, 2009 Report Posted May 16, 2009 It will be wonderful if these are the "BN Works" CDs. Far and away the best BN CD reissues (though some of the JRVGs sound great too). Many people will have missed them, and they are hard to find anymore. I missed a few, but none on those lists. Quote
riverrat Posted May 17, 2009 Author Report Posted May 17, 2009 ...though some of the JRVGs sound great too... Shrdlu would you care to comment on which JRVGs you like? I am preparing to unload some of mine, but I have not had the chance to compare many of them to other remasters. And I don't have my main system set up right now; after moving to a smaller house. Your input would be appreciated! FWIW, I have in my notes from old BNBB posts that the first 250+ JRVGs are much narrower stereo than RVGs of the same titles. But starting somewhere around June of 2003, JRVGs and domestic RVGs were made from the same remaster... Quote
Bluesnik Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 this is a nice 1000 yen series. but i couldn't say if they are BN Works or JRVGs. it looks like the last... Quote
Son-of-a-Weizen Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 This is just the first batch of 50 titles with another 100 to follow. Based on the fact that they are being released in this sequence (looks like it's tied to overall popularity), I can't imagine it could be another 'Works' 20-bit run. If it were, you'd think they'd be releasing them in the same sequence as before...starting with Miles, Vol. 1, Vol 2, JJ Johnson, Bud Powell, etc.... right? I wouldn't be surprised if those TOCJ-85XX releases are reissues of the cheap "TOCJ24" Blue Notes with catalogue numbers TOCJ-6XXX that were released in the early 2000s. I picked up several of those, but decided to ditch them after a few listening sessions because I didn't like the sound. Edited May 17, 2009 by J.A.W. Quote

If this was a 'Works' re-issue, Miles Davis Vol. 1 would be the first one to hit the shelves....not Coltrane. I agree w/you....this must be those other ones. Quote
kinuta Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 The titles were selected by a poll which I think was conducted by Swing Journal. Readers were asked which titles they would most like to see reissued. That's why the reissues are not starting with Miles Vol 1. Quote

We could have at least made an effort to kidnap the SJ mailroom staff and infiltrate in one of our own to shuffle those votes around a little bit....maybe sneak Tippin' the Scales and some other goodies in there? David Ayers Posted May 19, 2009 Report Posted May 19, 2009 The esteemed readers of Swing Journal need to get out more, IMO. Quote
kinuta Posted May 19, 2009 Report Posted May 19, 2009 (edited) I went back and reread the original release information. Swing Journal is not guilty. EMI Japan had a website called Sound Town Jazz, which conducted a survey to select ' My best three BN', from which a magazine 'BN 100 Best' was compiled and this has been used as the basis for the new series releases. It sounds like a lot of nonsense to me, they just want a publicity gimmick to go with the low price reissues. Personally I couldn't care less, I got most. if not all of the BN Works ages ago. As soon as I confirm if they are BN Works reissues or the over rated RVG's I'll let you know.
