undergroundagent Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 I was listening to this one in the car on the way home from work today, and it's a really nice disc! Lots of great chops, and it also had a very jazzy feel to it. Very much soul-jazz(ish). Any comments? Quote
Joe G Posted November 15, 2003 Report Posted November 15, 2003 I'm waiting for it to show up at BMG. I picked up Joyful Noise after seeing Derek with the Allman Bros. last summer (and being very impressed). I thought it was okay, but not as powerful as what I heard at the concert. JN is very eclectic, and I've heard that the new one is more unified. True? Quote
BFrank Posted November 15, 2003 Report Posted November 15, 2003 It IS on BMG. I listened to some samples the other day. I've heard a lot about him. Pretty interesting - he does jazz tunes. "Afro Blue", "Oriental Folk Song" and a tune called "Elvin" to name a few. Quote
undergroundagent Posted November 16, 2003 Author Report Posted November 16, 2003 Alot of the tracks are very much the vein of soul jazz with organ. I would heartily recommend it as I was truly impressed. Quote
Sundog Posted November 16, 2003 Report Posted November 16, 2003 The Derek Trucks Band is a very, very interesting band. Derek trucks is a "jazzman" in a "jamband". Highly recommended! Quote
WD45 Posted November 17, 2003 Report Posted November 17, 2003 I was listening to this again myself. I have beena fan of Derek since all of the buzz surrounding his first release, and he has grown a great deal since then. Soul Serenade was actually recorded before Joyful Noise, and released after. I like this album much more, and I hope this is a vein he continues to explore. There is a nifty interview on the NPR website with him where he talks about the urgency in Trane's music, and then plays a riff from A Love Supreme. His timing is impeccable, and his tastefulness is beyond repraoch. It sounds as if he has many more years in his fingers than he actually does. Quote
chris olivarez Posted November 20, 2003 Report Posted November 20, 2003 Derek Trucks came up about the same time as Kenny Wayne Shepard and Jonny Lang and is easily the best of the three. Trucks is a brilliant young player with unlimited potential. It will be very interesting to see what he does in the future. Quote
