Chuck Nessa Posted July 22, 2009 Report Posted July 22, 2009 up. these are some crazy like the fox mofo hillbillies! Was gonna look but this comment made me understand I've had enough of these folks. Quote
JSngry Posted July 22, 2009 Author Report Posted July 22, 2009 No man, this is vintage, early '50s, these cats can PLAY. Check this out, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVYLpckjv8Q...feature=related take a nap until 1:33 and than pay attention for 14 seconds...Speedy West was from another planet, had to be. I mean, maybe you have had enough of these folks, but...they're a helluva lot hipper than not. It's like if Barney Kessell had never left Oklahoma... Quote
JSngry Posted July 22, 2009 Author Report Posted July 22, 2009 It's like Horace Silver being white and rural Southern... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sc-6bx_jW9A Quote
Harold_Z Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 Yeah...good stuff! Speedy and Jimmy are blowin' and doing what the gig calls for. I bet none of Tennessee Ernie's viewers are thinking this is jazz or too far out - so they're communicating and playing. I dig it. BTW - I dug Tennessee Ernie's show back then when I was a kid. He was on weekday afternoons every weekday around 3:30. This is New York TV I'm talking about. I was a young kid and didn't know it was country and wouldn't have cared - I dug it just as music. And maybe that's the attitude I still have. I wish I could remember Arthur Godfrey's studio band - that was around the same time period but a NYC show. On every weekday morning and I saw it often, but it's SOOOO long ago. Maybe a You tube clip will surface with the band in sight. I'd love to see if Lou McGarity, Cliff Leeman, Ernie Caceres etc presented as communicative a front. Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 Flying saucers instead of cowboy hats, baby, this is downright scary. And like Harold Z said, it's - gasp! - accessible. Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 up. these are some crazy like the fox mofo hillbillies! Was gonna look but this comment made me understand I've had enough of these folks. These "hillbilly" folks swing WAAAAAAAYYY more than many of those so-called "free" or "third stream" or "ethnic" (or whatever) pseudo post-modern freak show inhabitants too often touted as jazz in recent decades. :D So no need to be snide about them. Like JSangrey said: It's like Barney Kessel had neve left Oklahoma. High time to readjust one's coordinates. Quote
JSngry Posted July 23, 2009 Author Report Posted July 23, 2009 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaX1NkE3rmk...feature=related 1:59-2:16 Somehow, Lionel Hampton figures into all of this... Quote
