Ellington Reprise sold out!

Recommended Posts

  • 2 weeks later...

I just received the Reprise Ellington (#8501) today from Walmart.com. $79.88 not including shipping and taxes. Not only is this my first post but this is my first purchase from the big W. Ordinarilly I boycott them for their censorship, labor practices, visual pollution, etc. I guess it would have really made a statement if I decided not to but the Ellington from them. Guess I panicked. Well, at least I don't go into the stores.

Hi there,

I'm a newbie, & sorry for reviving such an old thread, but can I confirm - the Ellington set with this title available at Amazon etc. - is it completely different to the Mosaic version? Different sound? Different packaging? Is it numbered?

Thanks,

Brett.

As far as I know, the content of the discs and the liner notes are the same, but the packaging is different (check the two pictures on amazon.de). It is not a limited edition set.

Here are the tracklists of both sets:

Mosaic: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&t...10:rose4j674waw

Spiegel: http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/tg/stores...3048427-5509615

I've seen the version done for Spiegel (with the red Magazine logo) as well as another longbox set sold by Warner in the UK. The price is 60 Euro/£43.

The box on Amazon.com is either a US version or a european import (explaining the higher price). The indicated release date seems to be that of the Mosaic set, because the Warner set cam out later, in 2003.

Sorry to labour this point, but was there in fact a "Warner Bros"-packaged non-limited reissue of this title in 2003? If so, is the Amazon.com listing likely to be this version?

Here are a few things that make me think it might still be the Mosaic version:

- The release date

- The catalog number

- The photo

- The reviews, dating back to 2000

I am only interested in getting the Mosaic version - should I take a chance with Amazon or should I look elsewhere (& if so, where)?

Thank you,

Brett.

What speaks against the Mosaic set is

- "Label: Warner Bros / Wea"

- "Availability: Usually ships within 1 to 2 weeks", which means it is not in stock but has to be ordered from the wholesaler/label

Unfortunately, with Amazon it is impossible to get more detailed information on their products, because people in the support dept only have the same information than on the website. The usual reply is "You can always order it, and if it's not what you expected, return it."

Good luck

I'm not sure if you're interested but I have one for trade/sale in the Offerring and Looking for forum:

Duke Ellington - The Reprise Recordings (Mosaic MD5-193) 5 cd set. #4,961 out of 10,000. Excellent condition, book and all discs like new.

OK I've received additional information on the set at Amazon:

It is in a 12 X 12 black box. However, there is not a numbered sticker on the set. Here is some of the promotional text produced by Warner when this was released:

"Reprise Records celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of one of the giants of music, Duke Ellington, with an extraordinary, comprehensive, limited-edition five-CD boxed set of his studio work on the label during the early '60s. Ranging from Afro-Latin to pop, symphonic to swing, The Reprise Studio Recordings features stunning solos, orchestral brilliance, imaginative arrangements by Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, and superb stereo sound.

The Reprise Studio Recordings was created in partnership with Mosaic, the most respected jazz reissue label in the world."

Does this help anyone identify whether it is in fact the Mosaic set?

They claim it is "limited," but don't give the number of pieced produced on the outside of the box - where are the Mosaic numbers listed?

Thanks,

Brett.

The Mosaic sets have a handwitten number on the first page inside the booklet.

So it's clear now that this is the Warner set that was released after the Mosaic set went OOP. The content is identical to the Mosaic, but the collector's value is low.

Thanks Claude. I think even this Warners issue is now out of print, as most retailers don't have it listed. It's a shame both Mosaic and Warners make it so hard to find information about their OOP releases.

Regards,

Brett.
