Head Man Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 have u guys ever heard the Gearld Wilson Orchestra Of The Eighties lps on discovery? i have them all I wish I had - only some excerpts so far, which were pretty good. Would be a great choice for a Mosaic Select. Yes, they really are excellent. IMO they're better than his recent ones on Mack Avenue but then, even slightly-lesser Gerald Wilson's are worth hearing. BTW quite a few of his Discovery albums are available on Amazon at quite reasonable prices Quote
JSngry Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 "whoever it is playing the plunger trombone." Might be Dennis Wilson.... I suspected as much.Too bad it wasn't recorded on the west coast. The L.A. Wilson Band is better than the NY Wilson band. No argument here, none at all. Quote

The only negative is the tinkly electric piano, which sounds a bit dated in an 80s way on some of the material. At this time Gerald still had real A-team soloists on board too (Ernie Watts, Harold Land, Oscar Brashear etc.) Just listening to this one at the moment - recommended !
