chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 ok ok, so i saw wks ago a lp i wasnt at all familar w/ Arnett Cobb- Smooth Sailing-- clean but definetly scuffed Prestige 1st pressing, they wanted 49 freaking 99. got for 8 bucks on ebay, the 2nd press or so i guess, a late 60s issue with the dark blue "trident" logo-prestige labels, and a STATUS backing, even though the front cover still says prestige. RVG stampers on both sides, so its the orig stampers i guess, sounds REALLY good right now-- i mean, its bassically the 1st press. i dont care. if i had both side by side...i dunno, maybe one was tube gear and one was solid state, whatever i donbt know Quote
JSngry Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 (edited) It's Arnett Cobb. That's all you really need to know. Edited February 6, 2010 by JSngry Quote
papsrus Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 Wow. Great photo. The hands. the face. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 "Smooth sailing" is a great album. I have the same edition as you, Chewy - got cheap in Dobells in the late sixties. The bad thing about being a soul jazz fan in Britain in the sixties was you couldn't get many albums. The good thing was that, when you did find something, it was cheap because no other bugger wanted it. MG Quote
flat5 Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 (edited) That pic is how he looked when I heard him at the BimHuis in the late 1980s. He played very good. Edit: Looking at the photographer's name, the pic may have been shot at the concert I went to. Edited February 7, 2010 by flat5 Quote
kh1958 Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 You're going to want all of his Prestige recordings. Quote
carnivore Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 I once saw Arnette setiing up at a gig in London. Probably the Pizza. He put the horn together and blew a C sharp. Wow! It was like hearing the whole gig in that one note. His sound. vibrato, experience - it was as though you could hear his whole life in it. Quote

File this one away for the next "why don't the younger guys playing in the older styles do it for you any more?" debate. Quote
