Has anyone heard this?

http://www.allmusicguide.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:3xfwxztsldhe

It is a two-disc set just released by Varese Sarabande. Looks like it contains a lot of radio/V-disc performances that have been out many times. but if it contains performances from 1931, I am curious. I don't recall hearing any Fats radio tracks from 1931; anyone have information regarding these?

Thanks in advance.

i gave the question and link to the fats waller yahoogroup and get the answer that " Many of the selections are from the Associated Program Service 16 " transcriptions 1935 (APS).

None that were sampled likely originated in 1931.

The writer is technically in error writing:

Arguably his best work was done for Victor in 1934 and 1935,

Although the 1934-35 Victor sides are great, there were many many more of equal musical value by Fats, until his death in 1943, including the APS 1935 sides"

so, a track by track listing would be helpful!

Two Stash CDs from 1990-1, "The Definitive Fats Waller, Vol. 1 and 2" (they may have been on LP originally) draw mostly from Associated Transcriptions material and are terrific. As Dan Morgenstern explains in his excellent notes, these programs were recorded in the studio for broadcast as "canned" radio programs -- "brief musicales to fill gaps in programming." What that meant creatively was that Waller had good-sized chunks of time to fill (about 15 minutes per program) and served in effect as in his own producer within that time frame -- probably more so (or so it feels to me) than he typically did while making records that would be released as such. One feels the flow from number to number quite strikingly at times.

it seems that this double cd is from the label "fuel2000" and not from "varese sarabande". i don´t know why the all music guide side list it under the latter one. i suppose this new d-cd is a re-issue from material available on labels out of print now. ("stash" or "archives of jazz", later on "galaxy", comes to mind).

here are informations via the fats waller yahoo group:

"This double CD is Fuel (Varèse Sarabande) 3020618262 "Fats Waller Performance, Radio Recordings from 1931 to 1943" (issued 2010), and is a re-issue of an earlier Fuel double CD 30206142622 from around 2004 with four additional tracks, making 36-tracks in total. However, the liner notes are the same and refers to 32 tracks !!

Of course, there are no radio air-checks from 1931, or any commercial recordings from that year. The recordings are from 1934 to 1943 and have all been issued before. It's just a random selection of tracks without any rhyme or reason.

Since the liner notes do not give the recording details, I lit them as follows:

CD #1

1. The Sheik of Araby (NBC broadcast 5 July 1938).

2. Honeysuckle Rose #2 (Associated transcription 7/8/1939).

3. Viper's Drag (Associated trabscription 11/3/1935).
